Tried that one five years ago, having Rh AB Positive I informed Girne Hospital that I would be on emergency call whenever I was needed to donate, furnishing them with all my lines of communication, I never heard anything. It saddened me to hear that an acquaintance of mine nearly died last year due to a lack of reserve stock of this blood group, the army was asked to supply but declined. So if the hospital authorities cannot get their act together to save lives nor the military willing to aid the civilian population why bother? Blood has a shelf life of 90 days so rare blood group donors are normally put on hold for emergencies depending on stock levels.

Hi Brinsley,

Unfortunately Girne Hospital does not have a Blood Bank. The Blood Bank is located at the Central Hospital in Lefkosa. Everyone that comes to donate blood on the organised Blood Donor Days at Girne Hospital is put on a list, to be contacted if the Blood Bank has a shortage or particular requirement.

Perhaps you would like to come along to donate at our Blood Donor Day on 18th April and then you would automatically go onto the Blood Bank Database, and would be contacted if your blood type was needed.

I am sad to hear about your friend and surprised that the Army could not help. They have been very helpful in the past.

Hi Brinsley,

Sorry you can't make the Donor Day. I'm sorry but I do not have enough posts to see your email address. Contact me on kwenborn@gmail.com and I will add you to my list.

Hi Storm,

The Blood Donor Day starts at 10am and runs on until 1pm. Click on my user name and you will see our advertsing poster. Look forward to meeting you there.

Hi Karen,

Good luck with the donor day, I only wish more people could find the time to attend, it is so important to donate.

I seem to remember someone somewhere telling me that every donation an individual gives is registered against the name of that donor in case that donor ever requires blood in the future and if you do not have any counts of blood donation against your name and you find that you require blood after an operation or accident you are then obliged to get as many donations as possible later to help stock the blood banks.

There also does not seem to appear an age limit on donating blood in the TRNC unlike UK and I wonder if many people think they are too old to donate.
