Jamie Oliver, celebrity Chef, has named his new daughter, Petal Blossom Rainbow. He has two other Daughters called, Poppy Honey and Daisy Boo.

What is it with these celebrities and names, what's wrong with Julie or Katie or Susan?

I always thought Daisy was short for Margaret (or Marguerite)

My favourite aunt was so-called - real name Margaret. We always

keep family names going on the whole, even surnames are used as

middle names.

The whole cult of 'celebrity' really annoys me. It implies you've been on TV a lot for nothing that matters very much. After all, if someone is a brilliant author, athlete, musician, or heart surgeon, that's what you'd refer to them as. You wouldn't call them a 'celebrity'!

Giving your children rubbish names seems to something 'celebrities' do to keep themselves noticed. If the rest of us did that, we might as well call our children 'Picked on at School' or 'Bullied in the Playground'.

It's not exactly a great start in life, is it?

i think when naming your kids you do have to think about what they will think of them when they become adults, go for jobs ect.

also what they could be shortened to at school.

i just love the way here in cyprus the grandkids are often called after the grandparents.

our friend has 3 girls and 2 of them have kids all named after the grandparents.

the third girl has said when she has kids she will break with tradition and give them modern names.

i agree, daisy is lovely - still i think we must be careful now a day when we give name to children - it is not necessary , by the name to bring racist purpose - especially when thoses kids are brought up abroad - now a day in europe, being called mohamed, or similar must be hard to wear - nothing against it for myself it is just the opinion most people have, especially since the 11th of sept - in france they talk a lot of making CV for an employment without name or picture until appointment to avoid racist - i don't beleive it would change the mentallities !!! and i feel sorry for it

morning sylvie

i often wonder why people believe they they could have been refused for a job on racial grounds.

we had a business when we lived in the uk and would employ people on qualifications and experience grounds.

last week i saw on tv some muslim council spokesman in the uk saying that there was loads of discrimination against muslims in the uk.

i then spoke with my sisters ex a muslim living in london who totally disagrees and believes this is all political not racially motivated. with which i tend to agree.

i do know canada now wants photos on immigration applications so they can see the nationality of the applicant because so many immigrants now have european surnames.

lots of my turkish friends in the uk take up british names as it helps people remember them without trying to pronounce the turkish names.

You make some good points, fire starter. My belief is that people often say racial discrimination was the reason they didn't get a job because that means there's nothing they can do about it.

If they went back to their friends and family admitting that they didn't handle the interview well, should brush up their communication skills, or were under qualified - well, that would be something for them to address. Citing discrimination makes it someone else's fault.

I'm not saying discrimination doesn't happen. In the case of not giving a job to someone just because they were muslim, I think that has to be 'religious' rather than 'political'. UK construction companies often blacklist union activists - that's political. Canada's policy, on the other hand, can only be racially motivated.

The Chinese guy who showed us the Great Wall called himself 'Richard'. I know he was giving us a name we could remember but it seemed a tough choice, given the frequent confusion between 'L' and 'R' sound

hi croft

i saw this guy spouting off on tv and wondered who he was ment to be representing?

i have loads of muslim friends in the uk and they don't seem to feel he is speaking for them.

maybe the indian muslim community who seem to have more problems intergrating, as the turkish and cypriot communities in london don't have a problem.

i did here that lots of the indians are now applying to go to canada as they feel the uk is over for them. maybe thats why canada have toughened up?

Unfortunately, the moderate majority of muslims are under-represented in the media because they don't make for very exciting news. But a really ugly guy, screaming "Death to the infidels!" makes it to the front page of The Daily Mail, no problem.

I've been called and referred to by all sorts of names in my worldly travels but I still prefer to answer to Richard, though that still doesn't stop the derogatory remarks cast my way which I respond too. Rise above it!
