reported today in the hurriyet daily news. president talat says 'the cyprus issue can be and should be solved by the end of 2009.' this can only be a good thing for cyprus and it is nice to see someone working hard for a solution.

Re Msg #4. It is not Mr C who is the problem, it is the Archbishops over there. As a result it seems that his Party, AKEL, is nor breaking off its tie up with DIKO and insread forming a new alliance with DISY. This according to the Cyprus Mail over on the GC side. If so it makes a lot of sense, since AKEL is communist, DIKO is right wing - never was an ideal coaltion, and DIKO always do what their Cleric masters tell them. Much better chance of a solution with AKEL and DISY on the same side; Talat knows that. I thus remain very optimistic of a settlement - as Mr T says before the end of 2009.

I think they still disagree on a few minor details like, land return, borders, property and power sharing. Apart from those, it's a done deal. ;-)

Yes AJ I agree, there will be no, NO reunification, there will however be a solution and I think by the end of this year and with Obama in Turkey it should be one that favours the North..

Well it looks as though Obama definately has an agenda. Mr Obama said his trip was a statement of the importance of Turkey to the US, at a news conference in Ankara with his Turkish counterpart, Abdullah Gul. He is hoping to revitalise ties with Turkey, which have deteriorated in recent years over the war in Iraq. Is it a Military station in TRNC?? is it because Oil will be flowing through Turkey from the oilfields of Northern Iraq?? Who knows but all will be revealed in good time probably sooner rather than later if the US start throwing money at the problem to buy the result they want to meet thier ends.

The US will and probably already are throwing money around and it could see Turkey's rapid entry into the EU..and following or preceeding the Cyprus 'problem' solved...

why do some people talk up the negociations? in order to scare people off buying exchange land of course! never mind, this year there is a switchover to universal trnc deeds and no reunification means two states and a jolly good thing too long live kktc

Dear Geoff re msg 7 "It is not Mr C who is the problem, it is the Archbishops over there. ..." 1/ DISY is a right of centre party, too 2/ and AKEL-DISY accord on the peace talks would mean nearly 80% of the GC electorate would -if following the party recommendation mean a YES, if their leaders suggest how to vote. 3/ the "rump" RoC is a little like Eire was in the 60's - the role of the Church, whilst strong , is starting to fade...

Well Andre I purchased my Gaff on Exchange land and I am quite happy with the deal and very optomistic for the future. By the time I recieve my deeds in god knows how many years time they will probably say TRNC FREEHOLD and have no other title reference. I can live with that quite nicely.

Dear Andre_514 re msg 20 "why do some people talk up the negociations?..in order to scare people off buying exchange land of course! " REALLY? Do YOU know what the agreed outcome of the talks will be?! :0 Let's face it - with TC "dep. PMs" claiming "guarantees" and the GC position being somewhat different a solution LOOKS miles away .. Some of us want a solution, as it will increase understanding and help the Cypriots financially - esp those not able to access the markets for Tourism and Trade that so called "independence" has actually prevented. An Autonomous federated govt would have more REAL power than now.

it is irrelevant to most of us here, that there may be in south cyprus splendid parties calling themselves dickhead or dizzy or whatever but this is north cyprus where a mortgage is called a mortgage, and not south cyprus where huge numbers will never own their homes having paid hundreds of thousands to the trade, because in the nature of things there are "developer loans" on their properties taken out by the builders who really own them (source: cyprus mail) and this corrupt ragbag would be in the majority if a "solution" ever pops up? mark you once lived in south cyprus, perhaps you can defend the indefensible long live kktc/long live trnc freehold

Dear Andre_514, re msg 25 Sadly, as is your want - you would rather point out the obvious deficiencies of the "rump" RoC - which as you can see are well documented in the press and on line. Have you missed all the posts on here about similar cases in "TRNC"..? Have you seen me post anywhere on here ( other than the Aga case )is a similar fashion to how you are posting now ? Sadly, instances of corruption / unfair play aren't isolated to just one part of Cyprus .. Again, I detect a selective memory problem... how many folk remember a plan to make a lot of "TRNC" freehold title 99 year leases... ?

mark, according to your own postings there is corruption north and south of the line you have had your own clash with the government in the republic of cyprus... perhaps a case of banging heads together? but it is wearying to to bat back and forth that for every robb there is a beaumont and for every hidden mortgage in the trnc, there are one or even one hundred so-called "developer loans" in south cyprus having seen your many posts talking up the cyprus negociations, ("luckily for the talks" sic) I am forced to admit there is a probabilty that they will result in success not the talks they are dead in the water... but success in terms of converting less worldly membersof cyprus 44 that something can be made from nothing at all and when by year's end talat, christy and downer finally bury the corpse, the most humane solution for cyprus will emerge wet, blinking and new-born, separate cyprus republics, as deep down we always knew it would

Karoyian blasts Cyprus arbitration idea FAMAGUSTA GAZETTE 05.APR.09 House Speaker Marios Karoyian, commenting on Mr Talat's demand fof arbitration, said that it serves Turkey's goals on the Cyprus issue. Mr.Karoyian stressed that the Greek-Cypriot side does not accept any sort of arbitration or tight deadlines imposed on the negotiation process. Commenting on the issue of missing persons, Mr.Karoyian said that the Çouse of Representatives, in coordination with the government, will intensify efforts at forcing the Turkish side to comply with relevant European Court of Human Rights decisions to discover the fate of thos missing. -

ladies, ladies... interesting to see that obama leader of the world's most powerful country supports turkey in the eu while sarkastic and merkurial who actually decide the issue say "non" now that's settled, we can go back to debating whether any hypothetical "solution" for cyprus would make things better or worse
