| With all our debate and banter etc on land issues, please spare a thought for the victims of the earthquake in Italy. L'Aquila, capital of Abruzzo region, about 100 kilometers (60 miles) north of Rome, bore the brunt of the quake which struck just after 3:30 am (0130 GMT). Our prayers and thoughts are hopefully with the families, many of the victims being little children... Such events kinda puts things into perspective and makes us realise how fortunate we are. | It looks to be much higher. A terrifying ordeal for them. I do remember being in a tremor in Istanbul, and later there was a very bad one. Also, in Greece and it was good to see that the 2 countries helped each other at those times. I was not surprised to see a nun declaring on t.v. that she owed her safety to God! What about all the others who perished? Why did they deserve to die? I will never understand the religious mentality. |

| phylray totally agree with your comments. On that basis the unfortunate who died can also owe that to the god as well. |

Then they are "insulted in their religious beliefs". PS. No need to say that I totally agree with your comments. |

| Yes, I know Dutch, am surrounded by them! I have to keep my thoughts to myself most of the time. But they insult people's right to question the beliefs we were also brought up in. I just find it very arrogant and lacking in imagination to claim that you have survived by "God's will" when small children have not been so lucky. I am glad to see that many countries are offering to help out with all the latest practical equipment |

| RE msg 9, phylray: I hope that everybody will remember that the Italians can count gifts, not prayers. |

| Re ..What about all the others who perished? Why did they deserve to die? I will never understand the religious mentality. Obviously... you don't believe. In another interview a survivor, not a cleric, looking over the devastation says "it's a miracle... I can't believe that many thousands haven't perished" I would advocate though... that this tag re the terrible tradgedy in Italy be not hijacked and turned into an argument of belief or non belief. Our thoughts should be with the victims, no more no less. Regards Joseph |

| I hope that there will be many more survivors and that they find a way to detect earthquakes more reliably before they happen. An Italian seismologist was gagged for warning of this disaster in January by the local mayor. Now another larger one has struck an island disputed by Russia/Japan and tsunamis are threatened on the coasts. I hope people will be made aware! |
