We wanted somewhere reasonably close to Ozankoy and we did a lot of research on the forums and also had a look at the various websites before deciding to join Creditwest in Catalkoy. We made an appointment by e-mail with the Manager Figen Kuman who was very helpful and she explained all the various accounts to us last time we were out, a young lady called Nesrin now looks after us very well. I can see my accounts on line from here in UK, although their site is not "live" yet so I cant actually do transactions, although they are working on it....we pay our electricity direct through them and hopefully other bills will be able to be paid soon....no complaints so far. Good luck

i've been with the Turkish bank for around 11 years or more and have no complaints. when i originally opened the account there wasn't the choices of today but i wanted a bank that was secure as some of the 'newer' banks were not as secure. my husband has Garenti because of his work and i find they don't have a very good system for dealing with customers, everytime we have to go in we end up waiting at least an hour and everyone complains about the numbering system. when choosing a bank go for one that is well established and can meet your needs. most of the big banks have English speaking staff these days.

I seriously wouldn't touch Turk Bankasi.

The service level in Creditwest, Iktisat and Garanti are much higher. All with perfect English and much better rates than Turk/B and HSBC.

Im with Turkbank Chatalkoy, been with them for a year, good service generally, use them weekly, no problems with the spoken english, and an english rep (justina) there for the more complex items, interest at 9.5%. Will be staying with them.

If you bank with Bank of Scotland in Jersey there is no Depositors Compensation Scheme, that means that if they go bust (probably unlikely) all your monies are at risk.

Hi Denise

If you have a Para card for your Garanti account there is a terminal just inside the door put your card in and it gives you ticket, then your number comes up almost immediately, makes you unpopular with everyone else but saves a lot of waiting

thanks jardap i already use this system but there are still various other numbers given that nobody can explain. normally your card gives you a number in the 400 region and without a card in the 8 or 900 region but other numbers come up in 200, 300 500 etc and it's very confusing and the cashiers will ring a batch of 800 then a batch of others so it doesn't always work out quicker. i try not to have to go inside now just use the atm. 1 turkish guy was in there once who used the card for his number but other people coming in and getting their number after him were being seen before him and he was going mad at the system and the cashiers couldn't explain. they just need a cashier dealing with fast issues and others dealing with everything else. but i've only ever seen 2 cashiers working, that's the main fault i think when it's busy. i'll stick to my Turk Bank!

Hello Laine,

You say you are anxious about living in north cyprus,so you should be,not just what is the best bank, its the lot.

Give it a miss, the UK will seem like paradise after what you will go through in the north.

lainie - I think Turkey and TRNC are completely different kettles of fish. As I advised earlier - think very carefully!!

lovingcyprus

when all these banking problems started we moved our accounts from jersey to the isle of man.

my money is safe!

at least even if you use an off shore bank for a short time it would give you a chance to look around and make an informed decition.

as you know i don't trust the banks here.

That was a good move, I know that the IOM have a Depositors Compensation Scheme.

Many people do not realise about the Jersey situation.
