Is hunting an integral part of effective wildlife management and does it make a positive contribution to the countryside in general?

Or are blood sports cruel, since the suffering caused can be unnecessary and prolonged, especially in the case of hunting with dogs, where death comes only after an exhausting chase and may involve the animal being ripped apart by the hounds?

i think this is waaaaay too provacative a subject, and seems designed to cause a lot of problems and name calling!! No1 Doyen, i normally enjoy your questions, but this has the makings of a full scale war and shame on you for bringing it up...these conversations are best left off this forum as there are enough people with exes to grind as it is!

A full scale war? Are you sure? For christ sake, if i'd have said the TC's were wrong to invade Cyprus - I would have expected a 'full scale war', but to seek comments about blood sports......shame on you also.

I have a foot in both camps - on the one hand I hate cruelty to animals but on the other it seems (and I know that hunting is now illegal) that another one of our historic pastimes is being swept away.

For some reasons, adult discussion on this board is almost impossible, when differing views are aired, it always seems to end up in slanging matches and personel attacks, and i for one am tired of it....i have (somewhat controversial) views on this subject, but i refuse to put myself out there for an attack by some of the more spiteful posters, and i know this view is shared by a lot of others, therefore i find this sort of topic completely unnecessary.....

Just another view that will probably hang me...yet again....

hi doyen

i see both sides and with management like in the uk i don't have a problem with it.

many of my friends hunt.

i do feel in cyprus it has ruined the wildlife here and there now is very little to hunt.

there has to be a balance.

you could still hunt in the uk when we left but i believe it is only allowed now on private property?

Not against hunting at all allthough i can see both sides of the argument. Anyway if we are not meant to eat meat, why make animals out of it...........

Does the instigator of this thread spend his life thinking of inane subjects (that are bugger all to do with Cyprus)? Another post counter?

Oh! I'm very sorry Hilltop. I'll keep an eye out for the next topic you post on here. It's quite easy, look at the top where it says 'post new topic' and hey presto!

All you need to do now is think of something original to say.

Touched a nerve have I?

If you had posted about the hunting situation in the TRNC I could have understood it. Hunting with dogs (in the way you meant it) happened years ago and 2000 miles away. Pointless!!

Why don't you comment on the hunting situation in the trnc then. It's still a blood sport isn't it?

I'm personally always rather disapointed if at least two 'hunters' haven't been accidentally shot on the first day of the hunting season. One each from North and South, to keep the balance, naturally.

Of course, I feel sorry for the families, but it's just Nature's Way of clearing the dross out of the Gene Pool...

I'll get my coat, shall I...

I partake in endless bloodsports every year and do not recognise any 'closed season'. The more I kill the better and get deep satisfaction from it!

As I don't have a gun license,...

My prey is limited to Mossies and Wasps!

My first wife was Anti everything, she was against the fur trade, anti hunting everything. That was until I bought her a Horse, it was not long until she joined the local hunt and naft off with the first Hooray henry that bought her a fur coat.

keith

as i said there is little control here.

hubby goes here only with a couple of close friends who he trusts are in control of their guns.

they don't shoot sod all but my giant schnauzer loves the run around.

its more of a male bonding thing.

I do hunt ( UK and Cyprus) and thats my passion, I speacially come to cyprus during hunting season. In north part of cyprus alone 20,000 people hold shotgun license. Hunting is part of the culture I wouldn't go down that route that sport is cruel. One thing I can say is that hunters should be better educated to respect animals during off season and conservation.

I get it... animals rights are/ blood sports discussions are more likely to cause "offence" than threads discussing the CY problem , ethnic cleansing, and mass "legalised" property rights usurping ...
