Last week I was in West London attending a conference. While I was in the airport, returning home, I heard several people behind me beginning to clap and cheer.

I immediately turned around and witnessed one of the greatest acts of patriotism I have ever seen.

Moving through the terminal was a group of soldiers in their uniforms, as they began heading to their gate everyone (well almost everyone) was abruptly to their feet with their hands waving and cheering.

When I saw the soldiers, probably 30-40 of them, being applauded and cheered for, it hit me. I'm not alone. I'm not the only red blooded Briton who still loves this country and supports our troops and their families. Of course I immediately stopped and began clapping for these young unsung heroes who are putting their lives on the line everyday for us so we can go to school, work, and enjoy our home without fear or reprisal.

Just when I thought I could not be more proud of my country or of our service men and women

Carbotec,

That was great to hear because the press in UK has previously slated the lack of patriotism amongst the british unlike in USA where every soldier is given such a huge welcome home after a tour of duty.

Scoobydoo.....I reckon a lot of Vietnam veterans may disagree with you on that point.

I think they do a great job against all the odds and are proud to do so. We should hold them in the highest regard.

The e mail which is going around is really touching and at the end it asks everyone to wear something red on a Friday of blood shed by our soldiers and I totally agree with Lilli we should hold them in the highest esteem.

My parents were in the forces but I was so lucky that my father did not have to go to war, though my grandfather and other relatives have and I am proud of them for what they did and I don't really care if this is an email going around. I am honoured to be a part of their family.

When my oldest son, who is in the RAF, visited Florida last year, he found that all the visitor attractions permitted free/reduced entrance to serving armed forces. He also could not buy a drink in any bar he went in when they discovered he had been fighting in both Iraq and Afghanistan. Nice to think we would do the same in the UK, but I doubt it.

What a good idea. I will be wearing the red particulay good day as its Good Friday. Coming from an army family and my father and mother both served in the war and my brother several tours of duty. They are all dead now sadly so for them and all other service men and women throughout the world this will be my tribute to them xxxx
