Seriously though, am I being totally unrealistic in my hopes to eventually (within the next 10 years) move permanently to NC, get a job and residency? I'm a devout follower of the 'anything is possible' regime, but the more I read, the more I think I am living a 'pipe-dream'. Yvonne :(

Yvonne I am one that believes that if you want to achieve something then you can, I also believe that if you have dreams and you plan for those dreams then you will get there. You also have to be permanently positive because if you aint then why bother? AJ

AJ, you are stronger than me. Thank you for your comment. Right now life is pretty shit here in Ireland. It's hard to escape the looming recession, and yet all I want to do is run away from it all. Life is too short. But I have to confess, I'm scared of the future, and I dunno... the thought that I won't achieve my dream is pure awful. Shit, I just don't know what to do... Stuck between a rock and a hard place. Y

Yvonne. Life's hard all over the world at the moment. Don't let your heart rule your head. I agree with AJ that you should stay positive - even in these difficult times. Sometimes, however, the grass is not always greener on the other side.

Bill, I agree with you. But I want to look forward to living my 'later' years in a place I want to be. And the more I read here, the more I feel it's almost impossible; impossible to get residency, impossible to get work... etc etc. Don't want to be a downer, but reality is what it's about. And if none of the above is possible, I've got to think of another plan. And to be honest, I don't want to. I'm tired of struggling to achieve my dream. What do you have to do to be happy?!!!

Yvonne Ref message 3. Run away from it all? do you know that some of the most successful business people in the UK have been bankrupt more times than I have had hot dinners. And they have never run away from it, they have confronted it head on and used it to their benefit. Richard Branson and Alan Sugar are two of my role models. If you are not positive you will not achieve anything. There are only two states, positive and negative. You will always have problems in your life as I have and everyone else but being negative does not give you the drive to overcome those problems.

Anything is possible, if you want it enough. Life has been so bad for me this last two years. To a stage where just running away would not have been enough.............. However, i found that things that i took for granted before, such as the sea which is at any time less then 1/2 a mile away, but never stopped to take it in. Now maybe life is busy with one thing or another, but i now pull over and just watch the sea for 15 minutes or so and begin to think just how lucky i am with what i have (not much by the way) but i am thankful for what i have and not getting angry with what i don't. I realy find positive thinking realy seems to change everything for the better. Try it, and if you are in a negative mood, put some music on and dance. If you do positive, you will acheive every thing you want. Lastly, don't aim for the stars!!!!!! First aim for the ceiling, when you get there. Aim for the roof, then those stars will not be so far away. Good Luck, I am sure you'll get it

AJ, Lem, Bill, You are right. It's not an instant change of state of mind, but I know you're right. I'm a fighter, & usually so positive. And I will continue to fight, probably a bad work, I will continue to strive for my dream. Thank you for your collective insight. I need to 'pick myself up, dust myself off..' etc. Thank you. Listening to you guys sure beats swamping in self-pity. I can do it and I will. Thank you again. y

Spider, and you guys, You are breath to me. I am a shadow in your light. I thank you so implicitly for your brutal honesty and I feel so selfish (and rightly so). I wish you all, everything good, and to be satisfied with your lot. I am indebted to you all. I am sorry Spider, and I am glad everything is good now? You have friends (and count me there). Now I feel foolish. I guess I've learned a lesson here. I'll figure it out tomorrow. Thank you all so much, I've seen more of myself tongiht than I wish to. Yvonne

Hi Yvonne Sorry have never met you but - from N.I, went to school in Dublin, lived in Cobh for a year, moved to Newcastle upon Tyne, then moved out here to NC last September, the best move I ever made, don't think about it too long just do it, it's hard at first then with the right attitude it just clicks - good luck with whatever you decide

hi yvonne just keep planning but remember the grass is always greener on the otherside. live in the trnc is not just one big holiday! but if your a strong person it will be a breeze. (for those who aren't it tends to just make them bitter and twisted.) you are in control of your own destiny, go for it!

"Grass is always greener" - spot on fs. This is a great place to live and for us the only problem is getting house finished. Looking at another thread I believe shooting builders should be exempt under the ban on blood sports and certainly covered by hilltops suggestion. A lot of the other trivia that appears on the forums is due to some people wanting TRNC to be just like the UK. It is not and for 95% that is why we live here. Remember Yvonne, there are several thousand former UK residents that live here but you can count in units of 10 the number that post on the forums. Of course that could be because they do not want to post but IMO it is because they are generally happy and go about solving any issues quietly and in their own way. As with several above, do not give up on your dream. Why not, obviosuly cost permiting, take an extended holiday and have a good look around at current situation. There are jobs to be had but remember pay is not good.

oh Yvonne you sound so down. The future is unknown to all of us we just try to prepare for it. When we lost the Brasserie we were in a siuation where we coudnt affford to stay and couldnt afford to go. We both got in a deep depression but then the irish spirt came back and we decided to keep trying. Its not always easy particuay as I get knocked every which way. However Im glad we stayed even though I miss the family I just look around at the beauty here and the relaxed way of life. I can guarantee you that you will make good friends here that will help you and be there for you. Me included. Its always daunting but as Spider says dont live with the reqret. I have been watching the economy in Ireland and its dire. By the time you eventually life here things should be changed and hopefully for the better. Come over for a long break and get yourself used to the way of life. You have experienced Island life before but come with an open mind. You can always email me when you feel low xxxxxx

Hi Yvonne, sound advice from all on the forum, but my I offer a bit of advice also, my old dad used to say "Life is not a dress rehearsal, this is the real thing, so grab everyday and enjoy, go into the garden and look how beautiful the world, listen to the morning birdsong, and give thanks Viking

Hi Yvonne, I had a place in Spain before I came here, and watched many desperate people coming there to escape their lives in inner city housing blocks etc etc. Generally they found that life was worse, the only jobs they could get were the ones that even the itinerant workers would not do, and after months of endless fying chips for all day breakfast cafe's they went back broke and even more unhappy. This is a great retirement place, but unless you have cash to support yourself and / or a skill that is unique enough to get you a place in a market where you are both not a native language speaker and not automatically entitled to a work premit, then don't do it, is my advice. I am retired and so financially ok, but see lots of people struggling to scrape by and several returning to the UK cause the ends don't meet. I love it here...you think very carefully before you jump into this particular frying pan.... best regards TonyE

yvonne I myself live in Ireland Co'wexford.I know at the moment with the recession things look gloomy but look at some of the positive's compared to other countrys 1 no water rates 2 no sewage rate 3 no council tax 4 no yearly porperty tax 5 low interest rates on mortages 6 special offers on food items i.e supervalu dunnes pound to euro offers in tesco's,etc 7 some of the most beautiful beaches and scenery sometimes its better to take a backward seat and look at what you have got and not what you have not

Yvonne you have set youself a very realistic term to achieve your dream, you have said within 10 years, in that time who knows what political changes will be made, who knows what chances may come your way. You have been realistic so far in setting a realistic timescale to realise your dream. You will do it.
