Hi

I am just coming to the end of the process for importing my car. Can anyone recommend a place in, or close to Girne where I can get my new number plates made. Also any idea of cost ???

Many Thanks

Paul

Go to the South, find a similar model and colour of your car, copy down the Greek plate number and get a copy fabricated, fit it to your imported car and hay presto you will save a fortune on taxes, speeding and parking tickets! Totally illegal but what the hell, everything else here!

Untill you have an accident and provide the log book which will prove that the car is illegal and thus uninsured, I hear the olives, tomatoes and bead served at the local cells are quite good!

Hi Paul,

I am going through this process as well at the moment. I have been told you can get the plates made at a place in Alsancak, on the main road. Sorry I don't know what it is called by its the place that has the big parrot sign outside. As you head towards Lapta its on the left hand side. Been told plates cost 15TL each. Will be able to confirm this by the end of the week.

Yes the parrot shop if it has not moved is next to Cod baba on the Karaoglanoglu road, tin pan alley is the two streets behind the colony hotel

Aslan,

The Shop with the Parrot sign I was talking about is nowhere near Codbaba - the one I have been told to go to is in Alsancak.

If you are in Nicosia dealing with the customs, come onto the main Famag road, turn left and drive in that direction past "Jap cars" for a K or so and you will see "Neon" signprinters on the left by the yellow JCB building.

30YTL for a fitted pair of lazer cut plates whilst you wait, beautiful quality.

best regards Tonye

Hi Paul

Are you the fellow victim we have spent the past 3 days chasing each other around the various offices clutching ever increasing wads of paperwork?

Anyway we finally got our registration and got the plates done in Girne today.

Head toward Lapta from the main roundabout over two smaller roundabouts and look for petrol station on the right. Directly opposite the station is a small shopping plaza which you drive into and on the left is a big yellow sign saying OTO PLAKA. Take your doc's in there and they will make and fit your plates in 10 minutes while you wait. Cost me 30 ytl

Hi Diogenes - Re Message 6

Please don't quote me, but I think that you are allowed to import from the South if you bought the car whilst you were living there. I lived in the South for two and a half years but had to provide detailed proof of this at the Trade Directorate (Ticaret Dairesi) before they would issue an import licence. I think the 'rules' are probably designed to prevent people just travelling over to the South and picking up a cheap car.

Yep it's me.

Glad to hear that you managed to get your registration and tax sorted. Hopefully it will all come together for me tomorrow but I will make sure that I take my book along just in case it takes a while (as if !!!).

To all. Thanks for the advice re the number plates.

Kind Regards

Paul

Took us about 40 minutes all told this morning, so it was quite quick by TRNC civil service standards. However take War and Peace to be on the safe side.

Good luck

Hi Paul,

It must of been you that we saw there today ? we got ours sorted in the end!! The couple that had the weight issue !! - I really can't believe how expensive it is to tax a car here - but then maybe by now I should have expected it.

Happy driving!

Hi Amber

Yes that was me, but I would never in my wildest dreams accuse you of having a weight issue. Glad you got it sorted in the end.

Joe

Got mine sorted eventually, but cost me 1268TL (398TL for tax and the rest for registration). At least it is done now and the threat of future impoundings has gone away - at least until they change the rules again!!!!.

Enjoy the rest of your stay.

Best Wishes

Paul

Thanks Paul !! I think the 398 TL is for the registration, the rest of the amount is Tax. Hope it will be cheaper to tax next year. Thanks for the comment on the weight issue, it is a very sensitive one!!

Bloody hell, that is a helluva jump considering that the difference between our cars engines and kerb weights must be fairly small. My total was 470ytl so yours at 1268ytl is two and half times as much as mine. Maybe they took pity on me cause I looked so poor and underprivileged.

Did you get your plates OK?

Hi Joe

Yep got the plates alright.

I think the difference is for two reasons:

1. Tax was a bit more (398TL) because mine weighs 1260kg and i think yours is probably a good deal lighter.

2. At Customs I was told that the cost of registration would be calculated as 5% of the Glass's Guide value that they used to work out my import duty. Glass's Guide value of mine was just under 18000TL - 5% of 18000 is 900 which is just about what I paid.

Whatever method they use to calculate the costs, it is done now and the car is sporting a snazzy new set of plates.
