Giving blood in the TRNC, is absolutely crucial!! I was refused major surgery UNTIL enough blood had been donated...fortunately a lot of people came through and surgery was a success...(Many many thanks to those of you whho donated)...please please take a few hours of one day to give blood....giving blood REALLY DOES SAVE LIVES!!

unlike the UK there doesn't appear to be an age limit as my other half who is 70yrs can still give blood, it seems to depend more on blood pressure and medication and they will soon inform you when you turn up, so please everyone make the effort as daisydukes points out, should you ever need a supply of blood you have to go out and find donors!

Every donation you give, I have been informed, goes against a record of your donations and counts towards you should you ever need blood, so start saving!!!!

msg 5...sort of...I was unable to have surgery until blood had been donated, but then i had already received an obscene amount of blood transfusions. So i presume, you will get blood in an emergency, but ongoing treatment will be postponed until enough blood has been donated.

I have been told that if you need blood in an emergency you would get it but you are then obliged to find donors later to help stock up the blood bank as there as so little donors plus blood doesn't keep for long.

Also if you need an op then you will have to do as previously mentioned, find donors.

Hello All,

The blood collected by the blood bank is always available to all who need it. When they are low on a particular type, they contact us to find suitable donors. Also, if you have an operation, they may ask you to contact people you know or contact us to ask people to come in to replace stock used. We have list of people, which is collated from the people who come to the Donor Days we hold through the year, and they are contacted and asked if they would mind going to the Central Blood Bank in Lefkosa to donate. But you would not be refused blood if you have never donated.

Hope this helps.

Please come to our Donor Day on 18th April.

I would like to give blood on saturday. I have only been to Girne hospital once and found it a very confusing place, Will there be signs telling us where to go?

Thanks

I have been going to give blood for the last 4 years at the hospital and you will see a huge sign on the front then follow the crowds round to the left of the hospital when looking at it from the main road.

Thanks for that scoobydoo.

Roisin - We have a seating area situated outside. You can't miss the crowd. Parking is available at the rear of the hospital.

Hello Kantara

Yes it is necessary to have a sit down and take it easy for about 30 mins or so. We provide tea, coffee, soft drinks and biscuits and there is a seating area for everyone.

Heavy manual work or rigorous exercise should be avoided.

Please come along. It will be nice to meet you.

Re msg 14 I was a gold badge holder in the UK and very often I gave blood and then went on to play competative squash right after with no affect, I guess everyone's different.
