Hi guys

A friend of mine has just purchased hotbird or something along those lines and he has all the channels on the guide but all the english channels have got a $ sign next to them and there is nothing coming through when he puts these channels on.

Does he need to get the box unlocked or chipped or something?

Where does he need to go and any idea of how much it costs?

Many thanks for your anticipated responses

Hi re msg 1

The dollar sign means the channels are PAY TV - scrambled.

He should have the hotbird dish moved to look at Nilesat - there are less channels - but more GOOD ones broadcast in clear.

He'll be able to see Euronews, BBC World and CNN.. that's about it.. :(

Hi mmmmmmm. Many thanks. How does he go about getting the dish moved? Can he do it himself or does he have to pay someone to do it for him? And on that note where would he find someone to do it?

The dish currently looks at 13 degrees East and must turn clockwise to look at 7 degrees west and the satellite is lower in the SKY - the dish MAY need relocating :(

The receiver then needs to be tuned to the new satellite

He will need an expert. For an hour..

*I* recommend "Iceman" ..

I have NO commercial interest in "promoting" him - he just has been around the longest and you'll never read a bad word about him...

Some say he is not the cheapest.. this may even be true.. but you'll not read he has done a bad job.

'Hotbird' codes change and the new ones can be found off the web and re-programed into box. Some TV Sat. shops (for a small fee) will do this for you or better still find a 14 year old computer whiz kid to do it and show you how to do it yourself on the next code change.

Hi Jimmyboy63

re msg 6

"If i was to bring a TV from the UK with built in Freeview would it work in NC?"

Answer: YES, but not the digital freeview bit .. Cyprus hasn't got digital terrestrial( via roof top aerial ) transmissions

It's planned for the RoC.. but don't know the specs

As long as it has SCART / HDMI sockets your DVD and SKY / sat recvr will work

Re the 1.8m

Iceman is reporting that 1.8m dishes are too small to work reliably with HD boxes in the north - they keep losing their "umbilical cord" to "mother" which they need to record - if they lose a connection back to SKY the planner gets "confused" and recordings can fail :(

If you use an ordinary box, this isn't so much of an issue - and F1 fans would still get the Grandprix on BBC News 24 - then go "interactive".

He is working on a solution.

Dear Richard re 7

Most folk don't want this "hassle" they just want their TV to WORK - not to have to ring a man - who may be on his travels - every time the codes are changed..

Anyway, way crack a closed channel when Nilesat has some good uns for FREE ?

IF you can share a big dish - you'll get loads of UK channels FREE

Again mmmmmm thank's for the advice.... if i go for the 1.8 dish i will probably live to regret it so it look's like the only option is the 4.2m dsh
