Anyone know this area can recommend a good place to stay overnight - somewhere with friendly owners- like small places - not soleless bed factories

You can't visit that area without going to The Mermaid Inn in Rye.

It's quite modern,...... rebuilt in 1420!

Also do the 'touristy' bit by taking the Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railway. Dungeness is fascinating, like another world!

Hi,

Sorry I am not able to recommend any B&B's in the area as whenever I went there I stayed with family close by. Have to say it is very lovely and Rye is a smashing place.

Enjoy your trip - but sorry I cannot be of more help.

Pity you've only got one day!

Beautiful part of the Country,..

Dungeness is like an Alien planet from 'Red Dwarf', weird but unmissable!

Hastings is my old stomping ground and Rye I used to know very well but unfortunately it has been many years since I was down in that part of the woods so I am not qualified to give advice. Please let me know how you get on as one day soon I would like to revisit.

Mark, Jean & I have also stayed at the Mermaid Inn, really nice hotel very helpful staff & Rye is such a great place. Do yourself a favour & avoid Camber Sands, unless you like holiday camps. I used to drive to Hastings from London/Kent borders once every couple of weeks just to buy fresh fish. However Hastings has gone down hill a bit, all the B&B's now DSS & dole day is a dossers delight. There are some lovely places inland to explore.

I used to live in lydd, Have never stayed at the mermaid but have eaten there loads of times and very nice. The power station at dungeness is well worth a look and have a visitors centre.

A friend of mine has a roofing company and was contracted to do some work on the flat roof to the reactor building, the reactor was shut down whilts the work was done and i was lucky enough to go on site and have a look round.

Very strange part of the country but also very beautiful.

Try the Zanzibar on Hastings sea front - very unique boutique hotel.

Sounds like it's got to be a romantic night in a four poster bed at the Mermaid!

May not be cheap,.. but we know your love has no bounds!

p.s. you must give a link for photos,... errr,.... well maybe not all of them!

Oh! I don't know though!

Are you making the trip to argue for all those who lost their land in 1066?

Mermaid inn in Rye is great, stayed there a few years back...

There is a good Thai restaurant there too, opposite a trendy fish restaurant..

We went on the minature railway too to Dungeness, great fun.. They actually had a minature guard working there!!

Hi Guys !

Thanks to all who offered suggestions ..

We booked here:

http://www.minstrelsrest.co.uk/room5.htm

as we were looking for something "different"-- homely with lots of recommendations.. Rye was 12 miles further east and my appointment was 11 am in St Leonards - opp direction :(

Fantastic hospitality, GREAT food - very friendly family.

They accepted paypal -which I like.

We arrived at 8.30pm and threw our bags in the room, and drove to Hastings Sea front..

Looked pleasant enough in the dark-with street lights- but didn't seem quite so appealing in the morning -preferred old town end -eastern end.

After SUPERBt cooked breakfast went to Battle, and Bodium Castle - before heading to appt in Maidstone, then Redhill and back to Glos'shire..

We had some Fantastic weather - considering the whole of the M4 corridor, London and Kent were wet and miserable.

Will post the photos on flickr over the weekend.

Thanks, again
