After the wet winter the garden seems to be plagued with snails, eating at the plants and citrus trees, anyone know of a safe solution to rid the little blighter's.

I thought we were the only ones being plagued by the little blighters......they are everywhere!

Solution?.......egg shells!!

I always wondered while playing in my grandmother's garden as a child why there were always crushed egg shells around the base of her fruit trees.

She swore that it stopped snails and sluggs from getting near her trees and plants.

There are also pellets you can get from garden centre's in the UK but I'm not sure if they would be available here.

Mr Pound in Girne do various products in the garden section.....might be worth a look.

Please don't use pellets, someone recommended them to me, and the poor things die a horrible slow death, before eventually sort of exploding! There must be a more humane way of getting rid of them.

Thanks Keith

I liked this part. Sink a shallow jar so the top is flush with the ground. Fill the trap with beer, regular or non alcoholic to 1/2 inch from the top and wait for the slugs to fall in and drown. A recent survey on what kind of beer slugs like best tells us they prefer Budweiser, Bud light, Coors light, Michelob, Old Milwaukee. Pretty good taste buds huh?

Will give Efes a go, Got some straight from the sore belly factory, I have seen what that does to people (self included). surely can't fail.

Fred

You should have brought some with you on Saturday, With the solution, Beer, and that French girl it could have been fun. Snail Hunting of course. What an excuse for being behind the bush with her.

Eat Them,! I lived in Portugal for Years, and they were a regular on the Table especially with some Beers.

You put them in aBucket of Fresh Water over night covered with netting, they climp up t o the net , so cleaning themselves, then boil for 10 mins with fresh herbs, WALLA !!!!. You have yourself a Free meal, and no more plants get eaten.

Feed them on lettuce for 2 weeks, boil them up and sell them to Guido. He can cook a mean escargot with butter, garlic and parsley!

Don't think of snails as a pest, think of them as a harvest!

If you don't want to eat them,(they used to be known as 'wall food'), get some chickens, they love them, slugs as well!

You may have to crush the shells a bit for them, but the calcium is good for strong eggshells.
