chances are its a break in the cable. either within 6 inches from the plug or within 6 inches from the cleaner. Its the first and cheapest thing to look at. martin

i think i may know the problem!! we had a vax one ( 6 months old)which behaved in the same way, threw it out. purchased a new hoover and on reading the instructions learnt that if it gets hot/over heats it has a cut out on it. hence the stopping and starting! it says you have to leave it approx one hour then it will restart. i guess this is what was wrong with the one we threw away. maybe you have the same problem??

I agree with spudlov, Probably the cable, with the machine running, gently flex and wiggle the cable, first at one end and then the other end. If it stops/starts consistently with the cable in one position that's where the break is! There you are - two 'experts' on one thtread... Keith.

most of these problems, are due to loose or broken wires,or loose connections. first check the 3 pin plug for loose connections,if this is ok, check the length of cable from the 3 pin plug to the vacuum cleaner for kinks in the wireing, if there are kinks in the wire that may be where the wires are damage.i had the same problem ,with a heavy duty drill, which had the same problem you discribe.i cut off the damaged wire and reconnected, the undamaged wire back into the trigger switch on the drill.result no more problems and worked perfectly since. good luck. p.s be careful when working on electricity, if in dought get an electrician to check it out.

All the cable comments good - you should check earth and other connecting screws on a regular basis on all portable appliances that you move around irons, hairdryers, saws etc. Sometimes it is the switch on the machine itself that is not working correctly. Hate to state the very obvious but always unplug not just switch off at the mains socket (in case that has a fault).

Richard message 3 - Not the best advice as we do not know if 1. There is anything inflamamble in the WD40 spray. 2. It could damage some plastics or rubber including insulation 3. The solvents might stop insulating tape from sticking. If there have been repairs using it. That aside it is great stuff I like the concept. 4. It has just occured to me its solvents might be conductive, I am not going to run a test so please let us know if you have and it was electricaly safe.
