We have just been asked by our developer, what type of pool would we like, Infinity or Overflow. I think I know the difference to look at them, but are there any issues that I would need to consider? Is one more efficient than another? I also think he's saying the Infinity bit can be only on one end, i.e. not the Roman end. Does that make sense to anyone? MC

Most of the people we know that have overflow pools seem to have a lot of problems with the pump, and also birds (of the feathered kind!) skimming the pool, drinking from the overflow and dropping mess. Karen

Hi Mc, my villa is almost complete and I'm having an infinity. Difference is infinity water flows over the edge of one side (usually the side facing the sea) down the pool wall and into a gully which leads to the machine room where it's then pumped back to the pool. The other three sides are usually built up about 150mm above water level. hope this helps. We paid an extra £2000 for this but I definately think it's worth it.

Hi Guys Normally an infinity pool is what we term in the trade an overflow pool and the theory is that the water flows out into the gullies all round the pool evenly, but alas a lot dont, overflow pools clean and circulate the water faster but A good skimmer will also do this just make sure your pool man cleans out the skimmer nets every visit, as a lot dont

Hi Simma, There are many designs of 'infinity' pools the water overflows over as many sides as you want, the idea is only to give the 'illusion' of swimming in a larger area of water than you own but the principle is exactly the same lol

Paul, There is some good info in the weblink you provided, although a little technical, until I get the pool myself, difficult to immagine what valve does what in what sequence. But I'll look it up again once we have it, thanks MC

Do I also take it, that if an infinity pool is to give the illusion of a larger expanse of water, then that only happens if the infinity side is "merging" with the sea or even sky? Otherwise there is no point? is that right? MC

hi steve , it would seem so , the only 2 infinity pools i have had experience with is 1 / you had to be in the pool to have the effect 2 / you had to be sitting down to get the illusion perhaps they were wrongly positioned i dont know . good luck pat

Overflow pools are nice, you dont tend to get a water mark around the side of the pool,BUT, there are numerous overflow pools that i've seen here where the edges of the pool aren't the same height all round, so water only flows to one end.

hi, we live on the catalkoy mountainside and our pool is an overflow type however when inside the pool and looking at the horizon from within the pool the sea converges together and makes it look one big scene. confused, feel free to come up and look

We are getting a 8 x 4 pool of the overflow type. May be thinking of a 10 x 5 nearer the time of completion. To educate the stupid....what is a skimmer pool ? Boy am I looking forward to wearing my leotard and posing around the pool !!

Hi Tiggy a skimmer pool is one that has its filters built into the sides of the pool usually about 6/8 inches below the top so the pool is never full to overflowing, the water is circulated and the bugs, flies and debris are collected in little filters, and emptied manually on a regular basis to ensure that the water remains clean. Enjoy your pool
