i always wonder why in KKTC some UK pople have the need to be sarcastics when other nation comeacross to them -

last summer, my husband and I were invited to a party offered by the owner of an hotel - we were having a great time and an english man came to us and start to ask questions - if we were living permently, what nationality, my husband said i am TC living in france and them i said i am french - he looked a me and said " i don't like french" of course you can guess i didn't live the comment without answer and i said " exactly like me, i don't like english and it seems you are one of them so can you please live my table "- i was discussing about such behaviour with TC and even english people we know and they said it make people not to like the UK ex-pats - how can people living ouside their country behave so badly openly - sometimes, beer and sunshine do not go together !!!!

we went to a friends bbq last year.

basically all expats and one tc couple.

the expats just talked amongst themselves and didn't give the tc couple the time of day.

we were disgusted and spend the evening talking with the tc couple improving our turkish and their english. ignoring the bunch of expat loosers!

the dog show last year was the same, expats one area and tc's another.

why is it people can't try and mix??

it would be to the benefit of all.

I agree Lilli. These people are just peasants and have not had the kind of upbringing that most of us have had like learning how to be polite to people and having good manners. They are in the minority but just plain ignorant. They are an embarrassment to good people here and to their country.

Its the 'Little Britain' syndrome again.

Why Brit expats will not embrace the local culture is beyond me.

So sorry to hear your unpleasant experience Sylvie and glad

you gave him good answer. One does meet these horrors

at times. I met a S.African man last year who told me there

were "too many bleks" in South Africa! He was of Dutch descent

I believe. It is real ignorance and lack of education.

That is one of the reasons we didn't want to live in an *English* area, we live in an area where all of our neighbours are TC,s, we can mix with our close English friends when we want to but actually enjoy being part of the local community. If I wanted to mix solely with Brits I could stay in England.

What an awful experience Sylvie had - personally I love France - my brother-in-law lives in Paris and I would move there tomorrow - but that's another story. Our villa has just been completed at Sweetwater Bay - we love it to bits and always eat at local TC restaurants - we have made some great friends at SWB and all of us agree that we would hate to end up being a gang of moaning Brits and we always try avoid Brits abroad wherever we are in the world.

Sometimes this board can be great fun but I have to say that I am becoming bored with the sarcastic and stupid remarks made by people who, no doubt hide behind their PC screens and remain anonymous and we all know that these people would not say such things to a person's face.

I have an idea. I think since all our county leaders (mine probably the worst offender) has put us all in a financial crisis and won't think twice to send our youth to war to prove their point, we should as the majority of mankind embrace each other and the the cultures outside our own. Maybe we can set the example that we are not necessarily what our government heads portray us to be. It's never to late to learn. Be a bigger person and a teacher. Social responsibility belongs to us all. Practice with a smile, I promise you it will never hurt (not counting chapped lips) ;)

to all of you : it is only a bad experience to thoses UK people because they are

alone and feel like conquerent thinking that cyprus is one of their colony - it makes us laugh and i pity them - we had as well and experience in a bar owned by an engish man - doing karaoke - they closed by now ! we wentwith lots of turkish cypriots friends, having drinks, enjoying and some of them wanted to sing - we had to ask why mary, john, or paul were always singing and not ahmet, mehmet and hatice ! after asking twice - we just stood up to leave - the owner saw that and ask s why - we said you do not mind to take the money for TC people for drinks but they are not allow to enjoy so in the future write on the board " forbitten to TC " i am glad he closed down a while after - we didn't make good publicity !!!

The price people pay for sun, cheap booze and cigarettes!

Try an Australian 'house party', the blokes are in the kitchen grouped around the fridge (where the beer is!) and the Ladies in the lounge talking about what Women do!

We know what you mean, I am a brit but spend my working life as a contractor and a guest in many international locations, never have I been predjudice to any other nationality why should I? My wife is Russian and a Sunni Muslim, we get it everywhere, stupid comments about Muslims, stupid comments about Russians, questions as to why I was married to a Russian and not a Brit only from Brits (I was for 24 years and she broke up the marriage by being unfaithfull).

We visited the TRNC Dec/Jan on our buying trip and sure enough we got it there too but ONLY from Brits, not all as we met some nice helpfull people just a few but enough to realise there is a them and us click. We spent our 3 weeks mostly in the company of some new TC friends who were/are fantastic people and did not let it put us off. We have bought in TRNC to live in TRNC, my wife speaks Turkish already and I am learning out of repect to our new friends.

Little Britain Syndrome you find it everywhere nowadays best ignore it

ps Pommies faithful? I think not! Good on you to have found happiness in a Russian lass. The challenge to learn the Russian language must be exhilarating.

Russian women are great. They still believe in real love and are very devoted from what I have seen...

And the language is extremely difficult to learn...

Hi,

well we probaly tread the same ground sometimes but I am a Logistics, Procurment and Materials Management Consultant mostly to the Petrochem Industry. Well my Current wife is certainly more devoted than the first.

The Language, not too difficult to get to a get by stage, then it gets rough so I just get by.

My friend, who is English, has been happily married to a T.C for

over 40 years. They were in Cyprus during part of the 'troubles'

and I am glad I will be seeing them both in Kibris next week.

Thanks for the correction, exactly why I need to go back to France as I'm forgetting so much due to lack of practice as so few people speak French in the TRNC. I've tuned into London and Northern accents which does take time, but at what cost! My spoken French is much better than the written word but I just cannot conjugate my French verbs. Dommage!

brinsley,

if you cannot congugte the french verbs it must be like a monkey french language ! never mind if you live in cyprus learn turkish it is more important than french to adapt and mix with people and the TC will like you more of course even if most of them - the one i know - speak perfect english -

domage ! one m - if you put 2 m the prononciation is different and means nothing !

I sometimes feel embarresed to be English at what i see goes on by the British in Cyprus. When you are in someone elses country you adapt yourself to there ways and learn by adapting this you can then pass on to other people.

I love Cyprus the people and the weather. When we bought our villa there was no way did i want to be in the british area i wanted to learn of the Cypriots and adapt to there way of life. I also love France and had many a wonderful caravan hoiliday in the area of La Rochelle. It is good to see so many people on this forum have a positive attitude about the people of Cyprus and France

Hi Sylvie

We are regular visitors to Nice and have never found anyone to be rude, in fact the people who live in the apartment block where we stay could not be more friendly or helpful, we love it there and always enjoy our visit.

What rubbish, what generalisation. Whatever nationality, people are people - not all Brits are the same, not all Cypriots are the same, not all French are the same. You like some, you dislike others. Nothing to do with their nationality. People relate to each other because they have the same views, the same outlook on life, the same moral values, the same decency. How can you say you 'love the Cypriots', 'I ony mix with TCs' or you are 'embarrassed by the Brits' as if they are all the same? Thankgod we are all different and some of us look a bit further and find rewarding relationships that go beyond nationality.

I.

cyprusacive,

do not be so virulent - and read the subject of the post ! we are not talking of the entiere humaniny which is of course very different - still i can say that some nation are more open to other because of their culture - polite and respectful than others - i am more mediterranen i am from the center and i feel more comfortable with southern people - of course stupidity is everywhere !

I think the point is that regardless of nationality [although perhaps more with Brits], there is an"ex-pat" mentality that assumes the indigenous population are there simply to serve them, and like to moan at everything they don't like.

Ultimately there needs to be a balance- as regards NC, unfortunately I haven't yet learned much Turkish, but where you do try almost wityhout exception people are appreciative of the effort, even if it's not grammatically correct. Yes we visitors/expats do add to the economy, but nonetheless we are guests, and should act as such.
