Likewise Happy St George's Day. Apparently it is also Shakespeare Day in UK as well. Also the equivalent to St Valentine's Day in Spain! Seems to quite a day! Sandie

Some facts about St George.

Born in Turkey (in Cappadocia)

Lived in 3rd century

His parents were Christian

Became a Roman soldier

Protested against Rome's persecution of Christians

Imprisoned and tortured, but stayed true to his faith

Beheaded at Lydda in Palestine

St George is patron saint not only of England but also of Aragon, Catalonia, Georgia, Lithuania, Palestine and Portugal amongst others, although he is celebrated on different days.

St George is also patron saint of scouts, soldiers, archers, cavalry and chivalry, farmers and field workers, riders and saddlers, and he helps those suffering from leprosy, plague and syphilis.

He never came to England.

Message 5. Excellent information, thanks, but where did the Dragon come from and what were the reasons for it's torturous demise at the end of George's lance?

Shame that a lot of local authorities have banned parades because they might cause offence to other religious groups !! Does not stop Id and Diwali being celebrated though does it ???

Happy St georges day to all, I am the only person in our street that has the flag of St George flying outside my house, and it's staying there all day.
