Can anyone tell me which is the cheapest basic system in TRNC where you do not need a contract. We are currently on the cheapest Digiturk offering but as we are only there 4 to 6 weeks a year it seems a bit excessive for us to pay all year. Anyone have any better ideas?

The 'cheapest basic system in TRNC where you do not need a contract' is an indoor aerial - don't know what reception is like in Esentepe though.

- And you don't get much in English!

Best bet is a Free-to-Air digital satellite receiver (cheap enough in the UK) and a 1mtr dish pointed at Nilesat.

Plenty of English films, series, and News.

Keith.

*I* recommend Iceman ( http://www.skycyprus.com ) - because he has been doing it for YEARS and I'm in the trade and he is admired by other installation engineers all over Europe.

Tektan are a major group here that does satellite installations (they put up an extra Nilesat dish for me). I would recommend getting a dish set up for Nilesite which has a good range of free English news Movie and entertainment programming arround 30 (a fair bit has arabic subtitles but you get used to it. For a bit more you could put up a couple of dishes Tirksat has several good English channels plus has much the same news channels as Nilesat. Hotbird is only worthwhile if you are getting the pay channel codes cracked regularly which costs money and is a hassle plus not legal.

None of this involves more than initial installation and box costs.

Thanks everyone for your input. Unfortunately we don't have sky in the UK so can't bring the card with us when we come in June. :(

We have just got a digital freeview type box also from tektan. It cost 400tl and that was for everything the dish installation and the box. Its from Dubai and you get around 22 English speaking channels-BBC world,Cnn,Fox movies and another Fox channel showing US dramas and a few others. We always found something decent to watch.

Trishy

I pm'd you as there are SO many options

1/ Digiturk - 1m Dish - DON't accept smaller -it rains HARD and the signal will stay working longer ! - requires a sub

2/ Showtime - 1m Dish - subscription - strickly speaking not supposed to be viewable in Cyprus - Digiturk and Nova only - but you can get 5 quite good English movie / serial channels / BBC world and Euronews free on this system WITHOUT a SUB - a good start.

3/ Nova - via a 1 m dish pointing at HOTBIRD - a GC system - but more English programming.

4/ SKY.. you can install a MONSTER 4.2m -or share the cost in an apartment or with a few neighbours - you'll get BBC1,2, 3, 4, News 24, SKY news , CNN, ITV1, ITV2+1 , ITV 4+1 , Channel Four/ Five / Five Us..

With a 1.8m Offset - better you'll get HD channels from SKY and c4HD and five but NOT BBC 1-4 or ANY ITV stuff - but you may have to reset your Hd box regularly - as the signal must be constant to keep the recording side working.

(cont)

from msg 14

OI MEANT to say - ran out of characters teat the 4.2m - receives MOST of the UK digital channels - so although it COSTS more - you do NOT gave to subscribe to SKY and you can use a Freesat PVR - personal video recorder - to record content - very useful as you will be two hours ahead - and NO sub !
