The original Annan plan was much to deep and lengthy and would need to be watered down considerably to have any chance of succeeding.I think the talks are dead in the water anyway now and two states has to be the way forward,

Annan Plan.

It took years to develop. Why abandon it now?

I don't think it will be abandon in it's entirity, like the article says any solutution will probably be strongly based on the Annan plan just tweaked a bit.

The obvious starting point for the talks that have been held one would imagine.

It will always be the basis for 're-unification' talks but it just depends on who wants to give away anything that was presented in the plan.

I'm not SURE the Annan Plan did take "years" to create - may be a few months - then a lot of "revisions" .

Paul - many GCs thought it wasn't long enough - as it left a lot of provisions for the long term future in "doubt" ;)

The Article is VERY fair... Christofias was more worried about staying in power with Liealotopulos, and COULD have said YES to a version Four of the plan and not version five that emerged as "Liealot" didn't negotiate in good faith..

I said it then - that it MIGHT have been the best deal they'd ever get - and it didn't preclude the ethnicities from ever living and working where they wanted...

I reckon TR could have been in the EU by now and this board would have been a lot less contentious ;)

The problem is GCs see the ECHR rule that the Human Rights HAVE been abused, particularly re Property - the loss of use of - and I don't know WHY TCs haven't used the legal route... GCs THINK they are negotiating away their rights..

i always said that mr t and mr c would say its a new deal and they decided it, but it would always be based on the annan plan.

Anybody with an ounce of intelligence will realize that if these two come to an agreement it will be based on what is known as the Annan Plan.

They could not in the short time they have been meeting put together a completely new solution plan.

If they do agree on a solution it will be the Annan Plan tweaked and presented as the all new by the Cypriots and for the Cypriots plan.

Remember the Annan Plan was the one agreed by all parties including the UN and the EU, it was Pappadoc with his sobbing eve of referendum speech calling for a " Resounding No " who cheated everyone of a settlement.

Dear codger re msg 9

"the Annan Plan was the one agreed by all parties including the UN and the EU"

Hmm, but the people of CYPRUS had to agree to it...and live with it..

"it was Pappadoc with his sobbing eve of referendum speech calling for a " Resounding No " who cheated everyone of a settlement. "

Not quite the eve, and I know he's dead but this man will ultimately go down in history as being worse for Cyprus than Dentktash - however, Christofias - the current leader - could have torpedoed "liealotopoulos" by coming out ansd recommending a YES - but he was more worried about keeping a coalition together.

Our" No means Yes" he told AKEL ( his party) back in 2004 - before the vote.. .. Bollox .. This guy now has to make the plan he has to sell look more of a win for GCs, when most of us know that the TCs and Turks who are "citizens" have hardened their attitude.

Cyprus needs BRAVE politicians
