Most of us know of sandfly fever and its virulence in this area but just today the dermatologist has made me aware of Leichmaniasis, a nasty skin related version. If anyone is interested, the following is quite informative : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leishmaniasis I'm off to the lab to get swabs done!

What I find completely amazing is that with all the scientists we have, not one of them has come up with a tablet or injection that one can take/have to release a antidote through the skin which deters these little blighters from biting.. Same with mossies...surely someone can come up with something!

What's amazing to me is that I'm the person in the room that bugs hardly ever bite! I've always thought it was something in your personal biological 'stink'! I'll let you know as I discover more!

If you put any faith in these things, I am told that the homeopathic remedy 'apis melifica' make you less attractive to biting insects. You need about a week for it to start working.

Dee, No, in fact I went to the dermatologist because it looked like a new, fast growing mole - and as an Australian, I'm so aware of those issues.

i had this after getting bitten in Corfu some years ago. The hospitals in UK at the time were on full alert for a "flesh eating" bug that was a problem in UK. I had to undergo surgery on my hand (site of bite) and then had months of different anti biotics and tests at "Tropical Disease Centre" in London. it took ages to heal and at one point plastic surgery was being considered. All in all it was really nasty experience - now i use loads of repellant and keep an eye on any bite i get. I think they may be more used to seeing it here so treatment may start sooner - and it was a few years ago.
