I was with a friend in Zara, in the Mall of Cyprus, yesterday and her purse was taken from her bag. Luckily when she told the cashier one of the staff had seen something on the floor and handed it in. She got the purse and credit card back but the money had gone.

At pretty much the same time there was a woman standing next to me, 'jostling' me, is the best way I can describe it. I had a small credit card holder in my skirt pocket with a couple of notes inside, I quickly put my hand in my pocket and she walked away.

We both saw the women and they were not the same, so there is probably a gang around. This isn't the first time I've heard of this happening, if you are going over please beware.

"Barstewards"...

I'm guessing the store has in-store security and a video surveillance system..

Did you report it to the local Police?

Without a complaint they can't investigate look at the vids and press charges..

No Mark, no in-store security, we made sure the staff were aware, but they didn't seem particularly interested, and didn't see any Mall security either.

Hi ! I know there are mall security guards and a video surveillance system - I don't know if Zara have their own video surveillance system.

I can well understand your reluctance to take it further - if it appeared no one cared.. :(

Had £250 stolen from my rented villa in lower Ozenkoy 2 years ago. Went to the police station to report incident and was directed to a cigarette smoke filled room at the rear of the station full of thuggish looking individuals none of whom understood English or was interested in my case. I left in disgust and was refused an incident number by the officer on the desk!!! It was like something out of Midnight Express.

Some years ago we were staying in a Hotel in Bellapais when my wife woke up to find a man knelt beside the bed. She shouted and he made his escape. It was about 3 in the morning and my five year old daughter and wife were screaming as I went to reception to see the night receptionist, who was asleep. When I managed to wake him, he said he would ring the owner in the morning. Needless to say we didnt get anymore sleep that night. As we were having breakfast on the terrace, 2 police officers came over to question us about what had happened. The manageress was quite unhappy about the police appearance while other guests were around. A Turkish friend took us to the police station to make a statement, which was made easier with him with us. Needless to say after 2/3 hours they basically said there was nothing that could be done. Fortunately this was the only bad experience of NC that we have had and it has not put us off, just made us more careful. We still love the place.

I think the South of the Island has it`s problems with Eastern European Gypsies some of whom are specialist female pick pockets. They were a scourge when i was on the Costas.
