Looking through some old VHS tapes the other day I came across some footage of Alan Cavinder at "The Melting Pot" along with a young Mohamed (Courtyard). It brought back many good memories of a much missed man, and of a lot of afternoons spent drinking and listening to his stories. I am sure he had the coldest beer in Kyrenia. Does any one have any memories of Alan they wish to share? He certainly was a character!!

Message 1 - I didn't know the gentleman personally, but there was a thread on here a while ago when his name was brought up on several occasions - everyone seemed to have good memories of him. I'm sure some of the "old school" will be back once they have seen your posting. J

What a character I remember him well at the Melting Pot when Mo used to help him out. He moved several times over the years and all his customers followed him. His last stint was at Pegasus, but I always think of his 'lunch time only' at the Melting Pot, then of an evening it changed into a Chinese restaurant, that was in 1986 think he came out of there in the early 90s. His command of the English language was fantastic and I really loved his columns in Cyprus Today - what a great loss to TRNC - and a very vocal and loyal supporter of TRNC.

I can remember Alan at the Harbour Club in the early 80's before the bar/restaurant was split in two. His wife Jean was the cook. Fond memories of those times, Cyprus was a different place then.

Yes when Alan was at the Harbour club, also his daughter Jane and her husband Funda were there. They moved on to Ambelia and lastly Funda's on the harbour. After Funda died she moved back to England. About 4 years ago we had the pleasure of Alans company at our house in Morecambe, he actually wrote about his stay here in Cyprus Today. Soon after he moved back here to nurse his second wife Joan, sadly he died. He was a true gent and a great supporter of the TRNC

Yes Rocking, every time we arrived in Kyrenia we used to go Alan seeking. I first met him at The Moonlight in the early 80's. The haunts I really prefered were The Grapevine, still go in there and think of times gone by, and The Melting Pot. Many a time we would be sat talking and and chaos would break out because Jean had let the fat get to hot in the kitchen. (she did like a vodka or two). I used to really enjoy sitting at M P and listening to the ancient brits chatting about old times.
