Took some tourists back to the airport the other day, speaking to them they felt things were very expensive here.

They did make one interesting comment ............. why can we get an icecream in town for our grandson @ 1 tl and a similar ice cream at lambousa is 5 tl ?

I told the the facilities at lambousa are splendid and thus prices need to be more their laughter was loud and hearty they guy said no doubt that is why the coffee and effes are expensive too...they will not return.

Have to admit that restuarant prices in NC have curtailed our eating out hugely this visit. If tourists do go out and about, what do they see? The litter? Although I must say there is a lot less in the towns I think.

What has struck me are the number of empty shops. Dirty empty windows in the old ones and blocks of empty new builds for sale or rent. I'm told that circa 150 businesses have gone in the strip between Girne and Alsanjak. The new shops that are open seem to be furniture shops or selling DVD's.

If the developers are not completing their villas then the new owners are not going to visit and spend money in restuarants and furniture shops etc. thus help the local economy.

I was talking to an English visitor down the harbour, he had a meal in one of the harbour restaurants when his bill came it said "double beers" and he was charged 40 lira for 4 effes, he also offered the waitress a drink, he was charged 35 lira for her vodka and orange ! He was not a happy tourist.

Where is the sense in this at a time when people are avoiding the eurozones because of the cost, surely the way to * cash in* on this is to keep prices attractive enough that tourists will not only spend while they are here but will pass on to family and friends what a great place it is to visit. Live for today again !!!!

This is Cyprus, the less customers, the more you charge. You know that it's a receipe for disaster, I know it, unfortunately they don't.

RE msg 1, Littlenige > and a similar ice cream at lambousa is 5 tl ? <

=> Where is this "Lambousa", Nige? Is it a village? A bar? A hotel? An icecream bar? The place with the tombs? Or your favourite place to fight your vendetta with Gordon Kent..?

PS. Where in what town is this "1 TL for an icecream" place, please?

The ice-cream sold at the Lambousa Market on Saturdays is done so by a private individual.

The Efes is no more than was charged for cans at the Pumas match yesterday.

Frankly, I don't wish to go over old ground again and again but you can not expect a "one price fits all" policy from different sorts of establishments. What pubs can charge varies greatly from what Hotels can charge and so on dependent on overheads etc.

There is some hope on the horizon.

9 messages so far and none of the usual,

"Its there own fault ,did they not haggle",

"Should have spoken Turkish and pretended to be local ,or got a turkish friend to buy it"

"Its their own fault for using sterling or not",

" If they complain about litter then they shouldnt have come".

Plenty of establishments giving great service, at good prices, must really get cheesed off,

Friends of ours had great meal between main road and harbour, and were surprised at how well priced it was and the high standard of service.Highly delighted, great recommendation. When they go home hopefully they will tell everyone to go ,and if they do ,to give the restaurant their custom.

Unfortunately they also were charged silly prices for 2 small beers on the lapta road the next day, which they also might mention.

Let Turkey control the tourism industry .The tourist police idea really works there.

DC,

I agree, and equally to the point -

girne 29,

What is the name of this place where: -

"Friends of ours had great meal between main road and harbour, and were surprised at how well priced it was and the high standard of service.Highly delighted, great recommendation."

Surely they deserve a mention?

If you name it, I guarantee that I will give it a try. If it's good, I'll recommend it - if it ain't, I'll not go back.

Keith.

Msg 15

............And they're pretty disgusting too!

There is something still immoral having a three/two tier pricing structure, one for Tourists (who have spent good money to come here) two for locals and another for students (for most Historical site visit fees) which is visible for all to see. If I should be a Tourist seeing all this discriminatory price structure I would feel pretty pissed off . Is it not the norm, Worldwide for one entry fee with a discount for students & O.A.P.?

As for Restaurant pricing structures it is a complete enigma to me!

Hans, would have liked to have bought four laminated photocopied printed Historical maps off you but for 50TL (£21)!! I think a bottle of water at 1TL is cheap!

Quarmby didn't actually say that you *owned* a taxi, but you were obviously driving one at the time, to own one I would have thought you would need a work permit.

Of course not so long as you were within the law.

Sometimes prices in bars etc are a little higher because tax/insurance/work permits have to be paid for out of the profits, but sometimes they are just thieving b******s

Message 1 - quite a clever move that. "Tourists" covers a multitude, doesn't it. Better that stating "friends" or family". As far as I'm aware, Nige has more "friends" and "family" who visit TRNC on a regular basis than anyone else I've ever met

Your judgement on whether a message is useless or not, interests me not in the slightest.

keithcaley ,

sorry I forgot to name the object of of my message was to show how a guy, trying to give good service and do his bit to give peple an enjoyable experience while in Girne, is let down by others.

Our friends went and told us,we went ,saw they were right .We told another two couples visiting NC ,they went and also liked it.How many places now give a large meze as part of the meal? Its actually too much as its hard to eat the main course. Thats what so many in NC dont see ,one satisfied couple has produced another six customers, who will produce so on and so on.

We had large full meze ,I had mixed keb ,she had chicken keb, 1 large beer ,one orange juice, one turkish coffee for me and one cheesecake for her. ended up less than 60ytl.

Its just started ,no name yet.

Go down between Arcelik and Bank, towards harbour, turn 1st left, into efeler sok ,

Managed to find the the Tourist Board Office OPEN last week and on entering over heard the Official telling two 'real' Tourists that the only way to get to Nicosia was by Kombos, only 2TL and not to take the Bus service as it was dangerous! When asked where it was situated she pointed in the air and said curtly 'where you've come from'! I had to intervene and told them the bus was better, cheaper and less smelly without risk and pick up opposite the PO which they knew. This did not go down well with the Official and gave my Mother all pamphlets of interest in Italian as all English ones were not available! Which was fine as she reads and speaks Italian but the English pamphlets were out on display!! So much for Tourist Board Service in the TRNC.

It certainly should, but that is the common usage here in Cyprus.

You could of course also join us for our Saturday HAPPY HOURS which are from 6pm to 8pm on Saturday instead when as before all our drinks are half price.

I look forward to seeing you when we can spend the entire two hours discussing the finer point of English grammar if you wish.

Come to think of it one could argue that the term "Happy Hour" is a generic term describing any period when drinks are at a reduced price as they are at Park Lane for those periods on Saturday and Sunday. Rather like the word Hoover has come to mean any vacuum cleaner. In time, of course, the term "Park Lane" will come to mean any hostelry where the prices are reasonable, the service first class and the use of the pool FREE to all.

What part of " interests me not in the slightest " do you not understand.

Please, for the last time, I consider you to be bitter, bad tempered, bad mannered and full of your own importance.I do not wish to enter into dialogue with you. Have you got it.You can have the last word as I dont intend reading it.

girne29,

Thanks for the directions.

I quite agree that the 'few' let down the 'many' - that's why I believe that all of us should do our best to publicise the good places.

Keith.

Message 61 - I do believe they're called "gottal" stops l as opposed to "gobble stops". Aren't they what turkeys do?

You are so far up your own orifice with your stupid so called "educated" replies. However, when any of us mere mortals asks you for an explanation of your convuluted reponses, you are conspicious by your absence.

jock1,

It doesn't by any chance involve a barbaric, medieval form of punishment, does it?

I don't understand theses posts about prices of water, bieer, meal..... because in most restaurant you can look at prices before deciding to eat, i think itis a law at well in cyprus to put the prices on the outside window - so if they do not look it is their problem they shouldn't be surprsed - all places have a standard prices they beleive to be the rignt one , noboby forces you to drink of eat - you have this all over the world prices going from1 to 10 for the same thing !and tat's s why so many tourist are taking package all inclusive, food and drinks when they go abroad - no surprise -

During our recent visit we tried a Restaurant on the road leading to the old harbour. The Prices on the A board outside were quite reasonable. We sat down and asked for the menu. The meals we had in mind were almost Double to those same ones quoted outside. We handed the menus back and left the premises.

Unfortunately it is an island wide thing the short term mentality. The TRNC should be looking forward to having a bumper tourist season due to the strong Euro putting people off visiting more traditional destinations like Spain and the "Occupied South".

People are looking for value for money and unfortunately some establishments prefer to rip some one off rather than have repeat business. We experienced this in a few establishments in the few years we lived out there. As a result we took this up with the owners to give them the opportunity to resolve the matter but when met with a shrug of the shoulders we never went into these establishments again. There are countless bars and restaurants between Kyrenia and Lapta and it was our choice which ones we spent our hard earned money.

One place we went into couldnt even get the maths right. 2 beers at 4 TL and 1 Brandy and Coke at 6 they insisted added up to 18 tl. What chance have you got???

Fell for a sucker punch last year in Alanya, got menu totaled up price for the meal ordered when it came to pay it was 25tl more, asked for the menu again so I could point out prices this time the menu was a different one with the inflated prices on it, so a quick note for wise keep hold of your menu until you've paid.

Its the old mediteranian thing, in the genes so to speak, if they can turn you over they will and smile at you while its being done, the smile will be on the other side of their faces when no ones buying the dodgey houses, and the place has a reputation as a bin compound full of robbers.

Visited a restaurant in Girne recently and we ordred 1 sirlon steak and 1 fillet steak one being about 5tl dearer. we were given 2 sirloin steaks, pointed this out to the waiter but agreed to have them. on paying we were charged, you guessed it 1 sirloin and 1 fillet. Reminded them what we actually had, they suggested we pay the original price and get the difference next time we visit them! They must have thought we just arrived on a Pennyfarthing up the Thames, give them their due, they were smiling when they said it. My response was a local shrug of the shoulders!!!

Yesterday we had a great meal in a fish restaurant in Northern Cyprus. When I wanted to pay the owner said: "No way, the first five times you come here the meal and drinks are free".

Good information, isn't it? No, sorry, won't tell you where it is - like most contributors in this thread, who are just blowing non-informative bubbles...

trncoldboy has it right.

why be mugged off, just leave and don't go back.

these people only do it if they think they can get away with it, don't let them!
