Who knows what it will be in 5 years time? That's about how long you could be waiting.

RE msg 1, hattikins : Landlines are (getting) obsolete in many countries in this world, but they are still very modern in TRNC. May I ask why you would like to have one..?! This not-recognised country lives with mobiles. And, unfortunately, you'd better believe message # 2.

There is an available line in the street where we live and my neighbour is willing to help us to sort it, just wondering about the cost.

Hattikins make sure you check who the landline belongs to and that there is no debt attached to it, you could be liable for that if you were lucky enough to take it over. Also watch out that they are not disconnecting someone else to give you the landline. Had that done from experience.

Bully for you Fire Starter but you forgot to mention that you are married to a TC, that fact alone will grease the wheels into motion.

I don't know what the connection charge is but I do know there is no monthly standing charge unless you have adsl. My bills are always reasonable and if you forget to pay your bill (you don't get a written bill, but you can interrogate the phone computer for your bill) they eventually cut you off. There is no reconnection charge and reconnection is usually done on the same day you pay the outstanding amount.

When I bought my house the phone was cut-off due to the previous owner not paying. The bill was about 70TL which I paid and the phone was reinstated that day.

Dear firestarter,

I find your post offensive, I live on a complex and it is certainly not a council estate. A council estate is a home provided for you where you pay rent. I own my home and pay one of the highest service charges in the TRNC. I chose to live here because I like it here in the peace and quiet of the east coast. You chose to live where you live because you like it amongst the local villagers. It would not do for us all to be the same but that does not mean we should not have tolerence for other peoples preference.

I knew if I waited long enough someone would actually answer the question.

Fire starter,

I get pretty tired of all the offensive remarks on this board about council estates, where people choose to live and the like, I asked about a landline, ok.

Many of the complexes here are beautiful, without tourists and people with holiday homes the economy would be in a worse state than it is now, fact

If you dislike TRNC so much then surely you are free to leave, just stop having a dig at those who are content.

Hattikins.

i have explained it many times before, his dna may say he is a tc but for all purposes he is a bloody brit!!!!!!!!!!

we don't get any special/tc treatment here, just the same as any other expat.

hatti, i don't hate the trnc and i am very content, but i am getting pretty fed up with every tom ,dick and harry having a pop at me 24/7.

see the council estate thing was a laugh, but i guess it hits a nerve with some, its actually like dealing with spoilt children being here on this forum.

juliet and pike gone, what is it nobody else to pick on??

so if anyone else today wants a piece of me, of thinks they can, go ahead i'm waiting!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You really hit the jackpot getting a land line in 2 weeks, it is well known here that it is very hard to get a land line, dead mans shoes and all that, and very few numbers, a person with a landline can take their number with them when they move property, hence why there is a waiting list.

when people stop acusing me of not telling the truth ( cos my hubbys a tc?) then i may lighten up a little.

we had our phone installed a few years ago so a price would be out of date, but basically if there is a space on the pole outside it shouldn't be that hard, or take that long.

May I ask in a civilised way and meaning no offence, has either or both you and your husband obtained or been granted TRNC citizenship ?

I ask as you are apparently able, according to my view on some posts, to obtain certain services with ease. Your answer to this question would clear up any apparent misunderstanding.

And just to let you know I do not live on a complex or council estate but on 1 donum of land with a house and no immediate neighbours and yes I do have the Kocan in my name.

When we first came to live over here we thought it would be a good idea to go to the Telecommunications dept in Girne to try for a land line, call us naive, the man in the office told us to bring an area plan of the site showing telecommunication grids etc and after we did that he said: 'It will cost you 100,000 TL. We will leave it for now I think.

Go to your nearest phone office and enquire. A lot of complex type developments are difficult because the builders rarely put in the infrastructure for telephones and, if they haven't, it will not be possible to get one. I have 2 lines but, I live in a village, and this presents no problems. My second line was installed within about 10 days of asking. It used to be about 70 TL but am sure it must have gone up.

A German friend of mine, who has a holiday home in Famagusta Old Town, got his landline in within TWO DAYS of applying for it. He had to pay a YTL200 deposit. Has yet to receive the first bill, so installation costs not known yet. He wanted a fixed line for Internet access. He also has a mobile fone anyway.

codger,

no neither of us have got citizenship! this is what i have been trying to get through to people.

how do i get things done? i have lots of cypriot friends.

us brits are very independent but there is no shame in asking a cypriot for help, something we have learned here.

try integrating more with the locals and you will be amazed at how quickly things can be done!
