I am really confused. Where have all the Greek Cypriots that lived in the North, been living for the last 35 years? Have they been living in abject poverty? Did they have any money given to them to buy property in the South? Were they actually given TC's property or is that just a rumour? In the Oram's case for example has anybody asked what he (the G'C) has been doing for all this time? Does he own property in the South? I know I have been told by Turkish Cypriots that their land was given to Greek Cypriots and sometimes it was large parcels of land. Would the G'C's really want the land back if they didn't think it was going to be a goldmine? Living in the more developed South must have been better than the under-developed North? Surely?

dafs,

if someone took your land from you and sold it on to someone else, would you not want it back?

So does this mean TCs can go to the South and claim back their land?

Hi Fire starter.

Fair comment but I suppose It woud all depend on, as to whether I was given other land as compensation at the time (which was not mine)

Remli yes they can

but

they must live in the south for 6 continuous months then go through the correct procedures to claim their land back, as long as it has not been requisitioned for a road , goverment building , school, cemetery or airport

Firestarter

Msg2 does not answer daffodils question.

Perhaps as you know a great deal about the situation you could help with answers to the question posed in a positive manner.

I don't understand why nobody on this forum can tell me where the Greeks have been living that had to flee from the South., 35 years ago.Do they own their own property? and if so how did they get money to purchase, if they just fled with shirts on their backs. In the Oram's case where has the Greek Cypriot gentleman been living for example?

Just a thought - do YOU think all your posts are "positive" ;)?

Daffs ... there are many European Court of Human Rights cases that categorically state the owner pre July 74 ( the date of Turkey's intervention/ invasion) is that - as in the RoCs Land Registry records - i..e the GC STILL owns the land.. so I guess, the same will apply to any TC who came north.

Daffodils

In essence post 74 GC refugees were housed in various forms of public housing provided for by the RoC government. Some of this housing was built on pre 74 TC owned land and some on public land. They were also given permission to use to some degree pre 74 TC houses. In general they were not however given deeds to these houses or lands. There are a few execptions where the RoC did 'compulasary purchase' pre 74 TC land and houses and gave full free hold title to these to GC, but in general this was only foir a small amount of refugees.

Refugees (and the legal status of such according to the RoC passes down the generations) in the RoC also recive a number of state benefits that non refugees do not. I am not sure of the exact details. Of course some also already owned proterty in the South as well as the North post 74 and they live in these properties. Others would have moved in with relatives and relations.
