Personally Nick everybody is expecting the worse, but buying a property anywhere in the world is a calculated risk even in the UK, if the red Indians want there land back is obama going give it back NO! Why should TRNC be any different. This is still a great place to be until a TC gets his land back. One thing i must say is Hotels are still being built the Marina has just been granted it's Visa, Trust me there is still a few twists to come.

Quite right! Always listen to your Government!

The Government that told us:

Iraq has WMD.

Max your pension for a comfortable retirement.

No more boom & bust.

etc. etc.

The same Government who gave no warnings of the disasters being faced by ex-pats buying property in Spain or Dubai etc.

Good old Government advice Eh?

Life's a lottery, it's easy to pontificate with hindsight.

geoff,

you haven't been here that long so when you have been around for a while, you will find people who are straight talking and those from the happy clappy crowd who are the biggest two faced lot of them all.

straight talking doesn't give you brownie points!

dutch has his own agenda with me, go back through his posts and all will become clear.

i don't have a problem with him, its the other way around, so don't give me a hard time for giving as good as i get.

in my post i gave good advice, pity more wasn't given out here a few years ago, then lots of people wouldn't be in this situation. i have both expat and tc friends who have exchange land, what advice do you think they would give??

fire starter, i think i've been around longer than you, my original log in was Geoff1131, but for some reason i could not sign in a few weeks ago so made a slight change. I'm not having a pop at you but every time there is a thread running like we have had today , you do seem to come out on the side of the GCs, but maybe i'm wrong and if that is the case you have my apology

Because one tells it like one sees it, does NOT make one a GC sympathiser, although what is wrong with that anyway? Whilst I don't like the ECJ decision and the effect it will have, doesn't mean that I can't see Mr Apostilides view. How would I like it if I was in his position? If I was, what would I do? Would I just shrug and let it go? Would I accept a paltry amount of compensation if I knew that a developer had paid say £50k for my land (scrub or not) and then built a villa? I think not.

It's one thing to get a judgement in a court, it's a totally different kettle of fish trying to enforce it.

This case is not just one person trying to stand up to the laws of the country and losing. This is a case of one country trying to enforce a judgment over another. If the Greek Cypriots want the land then they will have to come and physically take it, and by trying to physically taking it, that means a war. The Turkish Army may be a minority, but their hearts are strong and in any battle I would give you favourable odds on the Greek Cypriots winning.

RE msg 8, fire_starter > dutch has his own agenda with me, go back through his posts and all will become clear <

=> Bull, FS. You would have my respect for your point of view (like 6xm and even sometimes EricSeans - I disagree with both of them) if you would have said: "I live on pre-74 land in TRNC and I don't want have anything to do with expats who live on former GC-land". But you take money from these "thiefs" and in your spare time tell them on this board they are "thiefs". You are definitely a hypocrite. Have a nice evening and enjoy the "victory" of your GC friends.

PS. If you don't mind: my thoughts are with Mr. and Mrs. Oram.

Also....IS the Turkish Army in a minority ?

I heard there were 40,000.....how many GC (Greek) military are in the South?

Timothy - your argument is very childish on the level of "my dad is bigger than your dad" which I last heard in a playground.

The issues are about enforcement of judgement in the UK courts in respect of assets in the UK. There are a wide range of enforcement options available to judgement creditors against debtors who will be sued in the UK because of this Orams judgement. There is also a serious issue about the knock-on effect on the TRNC housing market which is already all but dead for a range of other reasons.

Its only if you have no UK assets, no income deriving from the UK and are happy to carry on owning your TRNC property longterm with no choice that will qualify you to be unaffected by Orams decision. Not many expats I know are truly in this position.

Krawpy, Timothy's argument is most certainly not childish, it is absolutely spot on....the gc's are cowards and would never take on the might of the Turkish army again.

We have just decided to continue living our lovely life here and worry about "what's going to happen?" when something happens. If we have to pay some sort of compensation then so be it but we are defo not going to worry our little heads about anything until something concrete comes out about our homes.

I believe the original question from Nick was whether people would still be interested in Moving to North Cyprus, not who has the biggest dad, is or is not a thief or whether they have an agenda and definitely not should there be a war?

In answer to your question Nick, yes I am still planning to move. I can't pretend that I followed the whole Oram's case but didn't they win then lose and then lose again and although I do feel sorry for their given situation surely they realised in the beginning that buying land so cheap must have had its dangers in an unrecognised state.

I'm probably about to face a world of hurt from others posters but as far as I can tell, there is still a long way to go with the final result and there is a multitude of good advice about how to protect your EU assets before you purchase in North Cyprus assuming you would now be silly enough to but ex GC land.

Of course having no EU does give me a comfortable feeling all over

I suppose this is selective historical recall and what had been happening to the TC's for many years at the hands of the GC's?

Turkey does indeed have one of the largest land armies in the world. But I cannot believe anyone would think if another 'war' were to break out it would be a good thing or want to be living in a war zone! Isn't that why most of the GC inhabitants and owners of much of the North fled there back in the 70s?
