Pacquiao knocks out Hatton in second round

The Filipino, considered the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world, makes quick work of the Brit by using his speed and technique.

By Kevin Baxter

9:20 PM PDT, May 2, 2009

Reporting from Las Vegas -- Manny Pacquiao stunned Ricky Hatton with a left hook to the side of the head, knocking the Brit to the canvas and bringing their junior-welterweight title fight to a stunning end with a second to go in the second round tonight at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

The heavily hyped bout figured to be a close one but Pacquiao set Hatton up with right hooks in the first round, knocking him down twice.

END OF HATTON ROAD?

People have brains to train and use them, they are not given to be knocked out for seconds, minutes, hours or forever. It's a pity that boxers and their fans have not heard about this yet. What a sad sight, this young Mr. Hatton stretched unconcious on the canvas.

Your opinion Dutch. Don't patronize people and you might not get their backs up.

Kevin I do think it should be his last fight. Whee can he go from here, only to prove he can only beat the rest but not the best. Shame really. Hope he's ok and can enjoy his millions with his family and friends.

RE msg 3, JameesB > Your opinion Dutch. Don't patronize people <

=> My opinion, indeed. And what has expressing an opinion to do with "patronizing"?

A group of my mates are in Vegas for the event and it appears Hatton is considering quitting after interviews with his manager. It appears its all over.

A press interview is expected later today after having chance to rest and recover fully.

His record was 45-2.

A surprising smashing defeat and such a shame...

The nature of the way he has fought over the years is to take punches to get off his "shots" as blows to the head and body are laughingly called. He appeared a bit "punchy" to me in pre-fight interviews, and I feared he would lose this badly. His is a brave warrior but should now call it a day to preserve the marbles he has left. God bless him!

Dutch - " It's a pity that boxers and their fans have not heard about this yet."

I'm sure Boxers and their fans understand the implications of the sport, and I agree its not to some peoples liking but thats another discussion.

All sports carry an element of danger, boxing is no exception.People who box no these dangers before they step into the ring.Ricky Hatton has been a great champ, time to call it a day now though.

James B,

Won £40.I said he would have to get past 2 rounds but he did not.I bet my mates in the pub will shy away from coughing up,call me all the lucky barstools and a few more choice adjectives.

Do have to agree with DC though about the the injury side of the sport, look at muhammed Ali, and WAtson after there time spent being battered. What is wrong with them doing what the amateurs do,and wear head protecters...Would certainly eliminate some of the horrid injuries these guys can get...
