Hi all,

I'm spending a couple of months in TRNC in Jan and Feb of next year. I'd like to hire a car for the time I'm there, but would like the ability drive into the ROC and go walking in the Troodos mountains a few times, have a wander around Kourion etc etc

I understand that any car rented in TRNC can't be taken across the border.

My question is, could I do the opposite and rent a car in ROC and take it into the North for the 2 months and drive back and fore across the border?

Thanks in advance.

Hello Andy

My answer to you is this can be done BUT you will only be covered by 3rd party insurance so any accidents or damage to the car or other car is your problem as southern rental insurance wont cover it. Id personally recommend Pacific rent a car for transfers and car rental in the north but this wont help with walking in Troodos. Although there are many great views and places to visit in the TRNC.

Cheers

Dan.

Andy - what Dan has said is correct.

Maybe your best way would be to use a local hire car for a couple of days in the south when you are ready to go down there and make a small holiday of it?

I have no experience of it so can't assist but try a web search for car hire and prebook it from the UK otherwise you might have troubles with the hire if you give them an address from the North.

Thanks for the info guys.

What a shame that both ROC and TRNC authorities can't resolve issues like this as part of their ongoing talks. It would help to stimulate tourism in both areas, to the benefit of both communities in the current economic climate.

I suspect that unless things change dramatically by the end of the year I'll do what you suggest flightholiday and hire in TRNC with the odd trip on foot across the border and try to hire a car on the other side.

When I came through from the South recently I was offered the choice of Fully comp insurance for 70 Euros or the usual 3rd party. Not sure if this helps. You still run the risk tat if the car breaks down that you have to get it back.

Better off taking a taxi to the south when you want to cross.

Rental rates are sky high on that side of the island.

You cant go wrong with £18 a day car hire in Jan/Feb. (Dark N Blue rent a car).

If you're hiring from Larnaca and want to take a car north, these guys are the cheapest.

Jay76,

How did you take a TRNC registered hire car to the south? This isn't actually allowed by ANY TRNC based hire firm, no matter what insurance you have.

re message 13- I beg to differ. We usually hire at Larnaca and drive North but are currently investigating hiring a car in the North and have received confirmation from bird rentatcar that they allow their cars to be taken south.

Hello Andy. I have just returned to the UK after spending a month at our villa. I rented from Bird rentacar and travelled to Larnaca to pick up my daughter and the family. It is now permissible to travel to the south with your rental company's ok. I produced the log book ( or copy ), my driving licence, passport and rental agreement. Car tax was provided free of charge and car insurance ( third party ) was 25 euros ( min 1 month ). The whole procedure took less than 5 mins and everyone was very helpful. Hope this information is of use to yourself or anyone else who may think that it is not allowed to travel to the south in a rental car.

Now that is interesting....

How long has that been allowed?

I had a conversation with the lady in the tax office and she said that the "rule" had been changed about 5 months. The guys in the insurance office confirmed it also.

Went south via Metahan yesterday, and there were a number of TRNC hire cars crossing. Seemingly with no problems.

Just ensure you have the vehicle doc's with you, and remember if the vehicle does not have south tax/MOT you will need to cross at Metahan before 1400hrs to get it (free).

Hi,

may be of some relevance, although not exactly what the thread is about. But just as a point of interest, anyone looking for long term car hire from the South can get a good car for 275 - 300 Euros PER MONTH. I dont buy, just rent as this covers the insurance tyres and servicing as well!

If anyone is interested just let me know and I will be glad to pass on details of the guy I get mine from.

Thanks for all the info folks, the upshot seems to that you can take a car hired in the north into the south. This has now been confirmed to me by a couple of car hire agencies in the north.

Problem solved (hopefully!).
