If you are going to connect to internet via Vodafone it will cost a fortune

Can you get your Vodafone dongle unblocked so it will take Turksel

My Vodafone phone bill for 2 weeks and not many calls was over £90

The Turksell 3g works very well but a bit slow in the evening

I bought an unlocked dongle from ebay - worked a treat in UK, brought it over this time and purchased a Turkcell 3G card but the dongle will not recognise the card. Had to buy a Turkcell dongle.

Vodafone dongles work fine in the TRNC. This was my internet connection method when visiting before Turkcell started their 3G service. I'm on Vodafone Broadband Euro which gives 200MB per month roaming in European countries (including Turkey/TRNC). You may need to force your Vodafone Mobile Connect software onto the Turkcell network as opposed to the Telsim network. Although Telsim is supposed to support data, I've never been able to get my it to work.

I had a problem with vodafone with my phone in TRNC,they want you to go on Telsim which is Vodafone/turkey but the service is patchy where Turkcell is fine.

RE Msg 5.

I have been looking at an unlocked 3G modem on ebay. I have told the seller that I want to use it either on Turkcell or Telsim and need the correct software to just allow me to insert the SIM and no more. The professional seller writes to me...

"will send it with Huawei Mobile Partner software built-in which works everywhere in the world with any date enabled HSDPA/3G mobile broadband sim card."

So, was your seller telling you the same thing ?

Thanks

I have an unlocked Huawei E220 modem (ex 3) which has the Mobile Partner software pre-loaded.

I took it into the Turkcell shop, told them it was unlocked, they put the sim card in, I picked up a 70tl unlimited access card, plugged it into my laptop and away it went no problems.

I am now looking at a wireless router for the E220 to plug into so that my daughter can access the internet at the same time in the house.

I have now formatted the unlocked dongle (entered the Turkcell settings) and it now works well! The only prob is we're in Ilgaz - not a good signal, only GPRS - I can sometimes go for a swim while waiting for Google to load!!

We are in Bahceli and I would agree if you cannot get a 3G signal it can be quite slow but is it better to sit by your pool on the internet at your own convenience or to go and find a wireless hot spot? I think/hope that Turkcell are gradually expanding the system.

Thanks both. I am in Iskele where I am told Telsim is the stronger signal. I will ask around a little more before buying the SIM. But first, I had better buy the modem !

cheers

I think they cost about 139tl the same as the Telsim one. The minimum you can purchase then is 4gb for 60tl.

With Telsim you can purchase 500mb for 14tl and upwards.

Definitely buy a local Turkcell Dongle and then simply purchase the air time when you go each time. I also use mine for work when we at our villa and I have found that 4gb is ample for a couple of weeks on line with internet, email etc. It works out very cheap compared to taking a Vodaphone one in the long run. The dongle auto loads the software and puts an icon on your desktop, so you simply click on it and you are away (once you have topped up your credit). Its pretty fast as well !

Be careful if using more than one time of dongle on your PC.. I have two dongles - one locked on 3 in the UK and another unlocked one - formerly locked to 3 UK -both Huawei - but different models - I'm only using the Huawei Mobile Partner software

The Netbook locks up if I try to interchange 'em .. :(

I bought my Turkcell Dongle from Lemar - they have a phone desk just tot he left when you walk in. They are also very helpful every time I come out - about once every three months and bring a different lap top or have forgotten my pass code etc.

If i was you and only going to be using it for short periods of time I'd go for a Telsim dongle opposed to a Turkcell one because you can buy their usage starting from 14.99tl for 500mb where as with the Turkcell one the minimum allowance you can purchase is 4gb.

I have two dongles from 'Three UK ' in the UK .. both made by Huawei- they are most likely tied to your UK network - I wouldn't use a UK roaming data dongle in Cyprus- unless you are a millionaire or someone else is paying - the roaming coasts are ENORMOUS :(

Inside your dongle you'll find a sim for your network - if you try to put a local Cyprus sim in - it probably won't work :( [ locked to the UK network ]

You need to get the Dongle unlocked, preferably BEFORE you go - to make sure it still works in the UK

I went to Majorca and had one of my 'Three UK ' dongles unlocked and it worked a treat, but the old 'Three UK' network software still keeps loading first and I have to close it - before I can make a connection - I also had 'issues' with the other Three dongle on my return to the UK..

So, if you aren't pc savvy - best buy a second dongle for use abroad..

If you are having trouble connecting with your UK unlocked USB, then it may be worth downloading this connection dashboard: http://www.dc-unlocker.com/downloads/Huawei/Huawei_E160

Back now in the UK after a great holiday in TRNC

Found the Lemar shop very easily. It did cost me £90 (converted on credit card) though for the dongle and 3GB allowance, so it was a little expensive. Reception with Turkcell was very good. Used Skype most days.

Now have one Gezz 3G Turkcell Dongle for Sale with about 1GB still left on it. If anyone wishes to buy it I will place it on ebay for £35 plus postage or any other reasonable offer.

Hi Pacman

I would pay £35 plus postage if its still available. I'm in the Uk but need it for TRNC.
