My husband and I were at a fruit and veg stall in Girnie Market today and were buying carrots at YTL1 per kilo, next to us were a slightly older couple with roughly the same amount of carrots, they were asked for 3YTL and my husband, who is blessed with natuarally darker skin, was asked for 1YTL. How do we overcome the pricing differential.

I noticed that some stall holders actually had their prices displayed and varied in one instance for carrotts (I think it was) between .5ytl and 1.5ytl per kilo. Only bought from stalls with prices displayed.

Other than taking rtddci's advice, I don't think there is anything you can do. It is the way of life here I'm afraid.

They actually had the price of 1YTL displayed on the stall and still charged a different price.

Take small change and offer what you think is correct. They are all crooks here, play their game and walk away if you feel uncomfortable!

Thats a bit of a sweeping statement brinsley, 'They are all crooks here"

No thay are not all crooks, there is good and bad everywhere, not fair to class everyone the same.

Have you been here for the last ten years? If negative you would not have notice the change in the TRNC mentality of trading practices!

We lived round the corner from the Wed market for 5yrs and always got overcharged!! I never paid, I gave them the produce back! Lettuce was 1tl everywhere, I picked one up, the stall holder looked at me and yes! guess what, he asked for 3tl! I gave him it back and told him I would buy one from Starling! Why do they do it ? Even when the prices are displayed they still do not weigh things properly. My advice, go to the market for the atmosphere, then on your way home, buy your produce at Starling or your favourite store.

Brinsley......

I have lived here for 4 years and though I understand what you are saying, I was merely pointing out your comment...... 'they are all crooks here' No not all are crooks...

Yes Dutch, we paid 1YTL and were gobsmacked as they asked 3YTL from the other customer.

The 'they are all crooks here' is not true. I once knew a guy that wasn't. Mind you, I think he's left now...........

I ve always thought doing a bit of price bartering with stall holders is what markets are all about and is part of the fun.

I never pay what they ask for at any market UK or Away even if its just a few pence.

i must say if you can speak a little turkish and show you understand the money (some people obviously don't) you seem to get treated ok. i have always been let off not having the right money or been given something extra and if anyones prices seem high to me then i don't buy, and remember bartering is expected. if i want to know the price i always ask in Turkish and i understand the money even though i can't speak fluent but they don't know that. it should have been up to the other couple to realise that 3tl was too much if the price was only 1tl everyone has to be aware where money is concerned. don't the English rip off the tourists and even their own people in the uk! it goes on everywhere unfortunately.

Take the time to learn a little turkish, it doesn't have to be fluent but as Mindy said - numbers are always good, how much and too much are extremely useful. We always ask prices first then shop around the rest of the market then decide where we are going to buy and yes some have tried to overcharge us but I have always put this down to their culture and different ways to myself. I bargain here, UK and any other market in the world.

Also stand near the weighing scales so you can see what they are doing (okay if you are a sceptic you may think the scales are out) but they are less likely to try and charge extra.

I have felt overcharged occassionally and I walk away only to find a stall holder chasing me saying 'sorry' and giving me the lower price, needless to say I didn't go back to them.

Wednesday market is supposed to be fun! Go and enjoy it, argue, barter, banter, practise your crap (in my case) Turkish with the stall holders. Take your time, be selective, always stand behind a local and buy what they do if you are worried. Just enjoy it and you will learn loads of things from the people there.

We are on a tight budget but I am happy to pay a few lira over what the locals pay (for a whole basket full) as I consider it the weeks enjoyment and its cheaper than going out to a bar and having a couple of beers anyway. Never miss it if I can, last week I argued over the cost of eggs and ended up getting half a tray for free as well as a Turkish coffee........

Agree with Ronaldo.

Ya Belles has better selection, great quality, good prices, and open usually 7 days not just one.
