RECOGNISING A STROKE Thank God for the sense to remember the '3' steps, STR . Read and Learn! Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke. Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions: S *Ask the individual to SMILE. T *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently) (i.e. It is sunny out today.) R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS. If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency number immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher. New Sign of a Stroke -------- Stick out Your Tongue NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue.. If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other, that is also an indication of a stroke

If you suspect a person is having a stoke, place an ice pack on the back of the neck, this will reduce the blood flow and may save their life. Emergency number = 112

Luckily I had an American nurse staying less than 2 weeks ago.Sorry not luckily,Inshallah/Thanks to God. She noticed long before I did the symptoms.Apparently I had saliva drooling left hand side of mouth, and then I was slurring my words, this was in the morning.!!! I then realised I was not walking straight,a bit like Inspector Morse's limp. Then a numbing down left arm and hand. So Dolmus to Girne Hospital.5mins checked by Doctor,5 mins ambulance to Lefkosa. Thanks to wonderful doctors and nurses there, now back home in Lapta. Mike

Mike, there are two important messages here. One, the good advice Guido has started the post with. Two, how confident everyone should feel if an emergency medical situation should arise. I have heard only praise about the treatment of people with a medical emergency in TRNC. No sitting around in A&E for hours waiting to be seen & once then seen by a nurse, another long wait to see a doctor. This was not meant as a dig at the NHS, it just became one. Mike we wish you a speedy recovery, perhaps instead of you being the flower giver someone should drop you off a nice bunch. P&J

In the UK recently they were running a TV add on how to recognise a stroke, they used the acronim, FAST The stands for: F= Face, has the side of the face dropped to one side A= Arms, can the arms be raised and help up. S= Smile, can the person smile. T= Time, time is of the importance for medical aid, the quicker the medical help, the more of the person you save A good way to rememberr the signs of a stroke RD
