Should we bring Sterling, USD or Euro into Girne. I doubt if UAE dirhams will get us very far and just in case we have a problem with a credit card I want to take in some cash to change to Lira. Also, is there any limit to the currency amount you can bring in, I will use the extra that I don't use to open a bank account with.

Thanx in advance, Paul and Luba

I don't think there is a limit to what you bring in - it's what you can take out that has a limit.

Also if you want to open a bank account here choose carefully.

Flying in through Istanbul tomorrow night Mike, Only a 6 day visit though to get the wife a vision of the real thing instead of just internet pages.

Lots to try and get the background on in 6 days, schools, banking, hospital (maternity stuff) and of course somewhere to rent but I have already booked another 10 days at the end of June with wife and daughter which I will use if I still need to get things sorted otherwise it can wait till August.

When are you and Vinera flying in?

And back to the original question, is there any limit to the Stirling I bring in?

In reference to #4 Vaughan, I want to get an account that will give me easy availability and a credit card. I am not bothered about the high interest rates at this point but any suggestions would be welcome for a basic account with international Credit Card

Hi Paul. Take sterling. I also just use an autobank to get YTL. Most hotels accept cards so you can also use that.See u there!

I know, why do you think I didn't post it.

Did you hear about the new jack up for AD accommodation that nearly sank ???

Frosty sent me some pictures, I'll forward them to you on e-mail if you want

Don't bring currency, simply use your debit card in the cash machines (ATMs). If you have a Nationwide card this will cost you nothing whatever. Other cards are still cheaper, and much more convenient, than money exchange.

So do you think the ATM's will accept Middle East Bank cards Dave, I don't live or bank in the UK and I have experienced problems before. I always carry some cash just in case, hence the question !!

daveq, I use my debit card too, however I have heard a few people have had there cards swallowed up by the ATM machines, so having some cash as a back up isn't a bad thing.

Yes a mix just in case. Is it BBME because the parent bank for that is HSBC and they have a bank/ATM in Girne.

GBP, Euros and US $ can all easily be changed at Exchange Bureaux into TL

Most shops and restaurants will take GPB

Do not rely on Middle East Bank Cards you certainly suffer currency exchange costs and they may not work

I have been using my Nationwide debit card all over the world, including trnc, for many years and never had any problems. Also, it has never been "swallowed".

Thanks Woodspeckie I was a bit annoyed that they had taken the service away from us.
