Does anyone know if you can take a hired car from the North to the South?

I heard in theory you should be able to however in practice the rental companies do not want you to and you need permission from them to do so. They are worried that people would use their cars to get to airports in the south then leave them there.

You must ask your rental company.

This is a common question and the answer is a resounding 'NO'

Hire companies here do not have the Insurance to cover the south, if you have an accident in hire car it will prove very expensive.

I enquired about this a few days ago and was told by a TRNC hire company that .....

"Unfortunately, due to government restrictions NO car hired in the north of Cyprus is allowed to be driven in the south."

You can take a car from South to North, but must buy insurance (at the border I believe) but wouldn't have fully comp cover, making it very risky.

But if you get permission from the rental company and have all their correct paper work it is possible, they just don't like you doing it.

You would still have to go through the procedure of getting insurance from the south as you would for non rental cars plus the road tax.

The only reason i put all this on the forum is I was told of someone who had done it however it is not common practice for the rental companies to allow you to do this for the reason I mention in msg 2

Thanks for all your very useful asnwers. I will need to pick up my mother in law from Larnaca later in the summer - so I will need to make alternative arrangements! May be take the TRNC hired car to the border, walk across and hire a car for a day in the South! We shall see. Thanks anyway! You guys are great!

Moover321 - I think it would be easier to hire a taxi from the North to Larnaca/return. It may work out a bit more expensive, but would save you a lot of messing about.

Scoobydoo,

Could you give me a bit more info about the hire company that were willing to do it? It would make my life significantly easier if it were possible. I'll be there for 2 months and will need to cross over at least half a dozen times.

Hi Andy

We hired a car from Eva hire cars just across from the Colony Hotel in Girne. They were only too happy to give us permission and the supporting paperwork to take the car into the South. We still had to buy insurance at the border though.

Regards

Paul

Sorry I didn't get back to you, we went out for the evening and whilst I was finding out the name of the company for this thread that allows you to take the car to the south, it looks like some other members have been very helpful and beaten me to it by giving you the names of the 2 rental compies for me, which is great as I only knew of one!

ship inn hotel deal with car renting - very reliable and affordable - taxi from airport as well - the most important thing is to have a reliable person in front of you because so many say things they cannot do ! we had a very bad experience with one taxi doing car renting - 40 MN late and not appologize - at 2 in the morning - so these kind of people cannot be reliable for car renting!!!

When we first moved here in 2003, we lived near Gazimaguza. We took a wrong turn in our hire car and ended up at a crossing. We pulled up prepatory to doing a U turn when we were approached by a TC customs officer. He didn't ask us anything, he just told us that we couldn't take our hire car South. Might have changed now but don't use hire cars anymore.

Bird Car Rental will let you take the car to the South and provide you with the necessary paperwork although, as someone else has pointed out earlier, you will have to take out insurance at the "border".

Birdrentacar will only let you take the car over ONCE. This involved having to talk to them over the phone, and then visiting their station twice, in order to collect the car papers and a letter from Memmet.

Unfortunantly, all to no avail since the tax office is not open on Saturday. You have to get greek tax as well as insurance. Not really worth the hassle for one day. Next time I will hire from Larnaca for the duration of the holiday. Does anybody know of a rental company in Larnaca (airport) that allows unrestricted access to the north?

Many thanks
