taxi/car hire in north cyprus and airport transfer

coming over on 24th may for a week,flying to larnaca. Is it best to hire a car from the south pickup at larnaca and drive through the border,i know there is insurance issues etc,or would it be better to be picked up from larnaca by nc taxi,then hire a car in the north for the week,i would assume this would be pricey? I hired a car in south when i was over with my parents and it was a bloody nightmare trying to find border crossing in nicosia.This time i have my wife and 2 kids so i dont want to take chances of not finding the border.Any suggestions would be helpful please. We are renting a villa just below bellapais abbey,so i definately need a car for the week.

Hi....hire a car from Larnaca airport...it is dual carriage way for over 95% of the journey to the crossing.



( A taxi is about £40 each way....car hire can be from £15 per day )



Ensure you have about £25 max in Euros for the border to purchase the extra insurance that is required.



Also...ensure the hire company allows their vehicles to cross ( 60 % of them do )



You will not be able to cross from about 1.30 am untill 7 .am ( insurance booth is closed )

hi stewart thanks for the advice,is it true that you are only covered 3rd party in the north or does this extra insurance at the border cover what you hit (not that im a bad driver!). Also we would be going back accross the border to the return flight home early in the morning,prob 5.30 am. would that be open then?Is there an easy way to find the border,i remember 18months ago it was nose to tail through nicosia,no signposts and after going around in circles for an hour or so i found it by chance!

The insurance is 30 euros for 1 month plus petrol for 200km, a taxi from the forum rental companies is £45 each way, not much extra if you weigh up the stress of the drive to and fro if you don,t know the way

you're right batgirl,perhaps i'll get a taxi to pick us up,it was a nightmare when i think about it! It would have been handy because i would have perhaps nipped back and forth accross border over the week,perhaps ayia napa for an evening or waterpark etc. maybe we'll just stay in the north all week afterall.

We always use http://www.birdrentacar.com very reliable, very competitive rates on car hire they can also arrange pick up from Larnaca or Ercan. everything they do is a pleasure not a chore.

A quick update on this for those who may be interested, you can now get fully comprehensive insurance at the border for taking hire cars from the South to the North, expensive though at 70EURO for 1 month!

I have done this, so can confirm this is definate.

use aone rent a car ,



i have just returned from north cyprus we hired for three weeks and got larnaca transferes they are exellent service and very good prices.



highly recomend them to everyone
