I put the tv on this morning and caught the last seconds of a report on Sky news re Turkey and the EU and all I heard was Angela Merket and Sarkosy saying Turkey could have priviledged status but not a full membership, has anyone else heard this...who the hell do these two idiots think they are...I do hope Turkey gives them the two finger salute and ditches the EU.

angela was very politely showing the finger

this has gone on for some time, french politicians use the metaphor "inappropriate"

britain has supported turkish membership since the days of john major

although there is a sneaking feeling this was partly to boster turkey against the common enemy

(ie france and germany)

just as britain worked to bolster turkey against russia in the 19th century...

all of this and britain's near-total lack of influence with the eu "leadership"

means that the conceit of turkish membership is even less credible

for those brave souls who still imagine cyprus is some sort of "bargaining chip"

It makes sense for Germany and France to offer Turkey priviledged status. They are worried about the number of votes that Turkey would have in the Union. Priviledged status might work for Turkey if they could acrue the financial benefits of priviledged status and not get bogged down by EU beauracracy.

I think Turkey would like to be part of the EU. It has power, it controls the Bosphurus straits, but it's people are poor. The average wage is 10,000 per year compared to the ROC 20,000 per year. Turkey can't turn to the middle east as these countries are too fragmented. The big problem is that Turkey doesn't seem to have any natural aliies (not that I can think of). In a connected world it needs to get connected. It's signed trading deals with Russia and needs to develop it's trading capacity.

ps In light of the land dispute between Croatia and Slovenia (Slovenia are blocking Croatias entry to the EU because of this), Merkel has said that Europe should stop the entry

Its all a big game. Turkey has no real intention to join EU and neither does EU have the intention to have her in. So what is all the fuss about?

Turkey wants to carry out some reforms and entry into EU is a very good excuse. Turkey specially wants to diminish the control of the army over politics and has the full support of EU. EU wants to keep Turkey in the waiting room and does not want her to go away. So really they are both using each other for mutual benefit. There is already a Custom's Union Agreement between Turkey and EU. AT first this cost Turkey some money but now she is reaping the benefits. If Turkey gives up effortrs to enter EU, this will not please them and thus they have threatened that if this happens they will have to reconsider the Custom's Union Agreement. This is not so easy since this will mean some European manufacturers losing out to China. This is already happening in any case, so EU will not want to make it worse with such stupid threats.

As far as Cyprus is concerned, they will open therir ports to Greek Cypriot ships but that will not amount to recognition. At the end of the dayh nothing will come out of the talks and the divorce will become official. Slowly slowly.

Certainly Turkey will never gain entry into the EU. Then ROC should not have been allowed in either !!! (Countries with internal border disputes are barred from EU membership) so the question is - ' Is ROC acting as an illegal member of the EU' ? Well of coure they are. Why isn't this argument being used in the Orams case?? Ask Cherry - she's only on a 100K stg retainer )

please people, wake up and realize that Turkey knows better than anybody that they will not be granted EU accession. But, on the way to such accession, they gain investments etc. And recently, there have even been talks about Turkish citizens being able to travel within the EU visa-free, again, Turkey using this to their benefit.

Erdogan and Gul know very well they will not be permitted to enter the block, but are using this to their advantage,

There are 5 nations which will never allow Turkey to enter, and they know this. One VETO is enough to block Turkey's accesion, and the accession will be recieving 5 vetos, from the following nations:

France

Germany

Austria

Greece

Greek cypriot administration.

France states that it's the geographical location of Turkey which is the reason for their veto......but look at the greek cypriot administration. The FCO classes Cyprus as part of the middle east!
