There is a restriction to how much of any cash you can take out posted in ERcan I am not sure but it might be in the region of value 10,000 TL in any currencies combined (please check locally).

ms garnet , there is a solution i know about if you have problems, i was involved in an offshore bank here , i pulled out now , but partners are still operating , if u are a foreigner ( not trnc natioanl ) you may open an account there , deposit as much cash as you like , they will issue u a debit card ( mastercard ) and then you can withdraw that cash from any ATM anywhere in the world !

I know the question is about Sterling, but what about taking out Lira. Also is there any limit on sending a cheque from NC to England.

Shouldnt be any limit on a cheque, after all its just a piece of paper, may be restictions on your account (bank would know), $10,000 or equivalent in any currency.

Do not know about the TRNC restrictions concerning taking sterling out of here but in the UK there is a limit 10,000 Euros that you are allowed legally to bring into the country. This they claim is to do with money laundering and applies per person so a couple can bring in 20,000 Euros worth of sterling.

The limit of 10,000 US dollars value of whatever currency is correct in that you have to inform the authorities if you take more than that out. Not so surprising then ??

ttoli,

A small correction to your statement "after all its just a piece of paper".

No it is not. It is contract to pay to the payee the amount stated on the cheque. Failure of the cheque to clear, commonly known as bouncing, is a criminal offence in many countries and may lead to imprisonment, the bank cancelling your account or having the facilities of being able to use cheques withdrawn. Your credit rating can also be affected if you bounce cheques too.

So if you think it's fun to send someone a cheque, for say one million pounds, think twice if they try to cash it as you could end up in a lot of trouble!

It is £1000.00 sterling; the reason for taking it in cash to England to then put in bank in UK was to avoid the transfer charges - from reading above, it seems it will be OK?
