Before we head into the week-end, something to think about.

We all know that torture has been forbidden for some time. However the reality is that there are states engaging in the use of coercive interrogation techniques to extract information from individuals, maintaining that by doing so they are saving many innocent lives, resorting to kidnap, sub-contracting of interrogation or even the creation of ghastly black holes such as Guantanamo Bay.

Is torture acceptable under legal supervision or should we provide legal safeguards for a process that otherwise provides no protection for the individuals who are subject to it?

Its dam neccessary, valuble info can save the lives of many, intell / info gathering no matter how small can direct resourses where needed, which can at the end of the day result in a shorter conflict genraly saving lives in the long run.

these people would show no human rights if the boot was on the other foot so why give them any, waterboard the lot.

I think some Australian politician was asked the question. His reply was that if torture of a terrorist saved one Australian's life, his only question would be which testicle to attach to the red wire, and which to attach to the black wire.

It's not pleasant, but [assuming that there are VERY strong grounds to believe the prisoner is holding information that may prevent a terrorist bombing], I'd rather have one injured terrorist that the scattered body parts of numerous innocent victims.

You not get truth through torture, only what the torturer wants to hear

Is it worth it? An FBI special agent from 1997 to 2005, told members of a key Senate Judiciary subcommittee that such "techniques, from an operational perspective, are ineffective, slow and unreliable and harmful to our efforts to defeat al Qaeda." (CNN 15/05/090

torture is used as a tool all around the world every day of the year, by many many governments, not only to gain information but also to intimidate the population.
