Judging by the age of some of you britts, im sure you would appreciate the following, My dad use to have a record stall in Petticoat Lane market in london during the 60's & 70's. He amassed a large collection of LP's ,singles etc all originals, factory samples, radio promos ( his freind was a famour radio 1 dj forgot his name , some of u may remind me) , anyways from 14 yrs of age i inherited this collection and very recently bought it TRNC ! Now i cant play the buggers since i have no proper turntable, does anyone know anywhere on the island where i could buy proper hifi equipment , or someone may have one for sale ? I guess i may have to go back to uk to pick one up ... oh and anyone here interested in this type of nostalgia ?

I have a similar collection from the early 1960's to the 1990's when digital took over. 45's, LP's, 12" singles.

All gathering dust in a cupboard. Such a shame.

Many of the 12" singles are worth about a tenner each.

Most of the LP's and 45's are quite scratched so don't think they would be worth much. I keep intending to get them valued by a dealer but never seem to get round to it.

Hahaha....well done Tommy....the classic salesman trick of creating interest and demand BEFORE actually announcing that you are willing to part with these precious things !

I await your list of records for sale.....keep them cheap and you may get some members biting !

Paul sold all his records when we downsized house a few years ago. There were hundreds, LP's, 45's, 12" singles, etc. He was very, very sad to have to part with them. A dealer bought the whole lot for not really a lot of money. Unless you have some very rare items, they may not be worth as much as you think.

Of course, if you've had them valued by an impartial dealer (unlikely he'd be impartial, but you never know) then it's another story.

I do regret selling them, but then again I never used to play them a lot & they did take up a lot of room. The ones I should have kepy hold of were all my Beatles singles, EP's & LP's.

my so has hundreds of vinyls I wish I could get rid of. All he does is mix and mix. its taken up one bedroom. Not anyone we know tthough. I thought that the originals would be worth some money. You know what I used to do with them and so stupid when i think back but hey we didnt think then they would may be valuable. I used to heat them and mould them into bowls and decorate them. Someone could have an original as a fruit bowl xxxxx

Tommy13 what you need now is not a turntable but a usb turntable. Basically you plug it into your pc and play the records through your pc. You can also record direct onto your harddrive. I have only ever seen them in Makros in the UK about £60-£80 plus vat

Yes thats one solution , but not the one im looking for , in uk i was quite the 'audiophile' , so i was into the traditional seperates system , an audiophile believes that the true analogue experince of vinyl can only be achieved through esotoric hifi , thats seperate pre & power amp ( valve amps ) , tuntable manafacturers that just make the turntable , another company just makes arms and another the cartridge , interconnecting cables , speaker cables are also made by comapnies who specialise in just that , and offcourse speakers , postioning , etc etc , its a complete different world , i have all the tunes as mp3 on my ipod, thats not the problem , but to recreate that sweet true analogue sound requires specialist equipment , no doubt on my next trip to uk, i guess is when ill be able to get this stuff again , i sold my last system(regretably) , However tehres prob somewhere in the south that does this kind of stuff , dont know if anyone here knows?

After some months....

Did you find the turntable in Cyprus? I want to buy one for a gift, can be second hand, but in working condition.

Any idea?

PS: I would love to see your collection... and how it sounds!

Regarding prices,We took a stack of old records to a record fair in Barnstaple last year. What you think might be worth a fortune can be bought for very little money. We sold part of our collection of 60.s stuff for £60 after talking to all the dealers.

Tommy, I know you only want the best and most beautiful - so here's what I have to offer you. No kidding. 1 : Brand: Bang & Olufsen, radio, CD and tape combination, classical beauty. New price was: 6000 Euros. 2 : Bang & Olufsen record player, to connect to the first item. New price was: 1800 Euros. The record player has a new needle (price was: 300 Euros). Four Bang & Olufsen speakers (included). Expect to read about your interest in this thread and then we may finish the deal face to face.

There were definitely a couple of mark 1 vinyl record player examples up at Amanda’s the other week but what the reproduction quality would be like is a guess.

Good Luck although Hans seems to have a pretty good fix.

Hi Dc , yes i did miss that post , thanks for bringing it to my attention .... being an ex 'audiophile' you may or may not know that we are not so fond of B&O , I was hoping for something more along the lines of Linn LP12 , Michelle gyrodeck etc if that makes any sense , thanks all the same but its not what i was looking for , However I would be most interested & appreciative if we could meet 'face to face' to discuss the 'Ikons of Cyprus ' book that i had mentioned about in previous posts as I believe it can benefit from your expertise & detailed knowledge of the history of the Island !!

I've got a Technics separates set up (including Turntable) with a Denon 5 CD changer and Mordant Short speakers that I will be trying to sell this April if you're interested. You can come and try it out first if you like, great sound quality from vinyl (the scratches come out in pure Hifi
