Hi!

I'm new to this-have been dropping in for a couple of weeks and find it very informative!

Please could you answer a question for me? When is sandfly season? When we've been out in mar/april we

dont seem to be bothered but in sept i end up looking like a pizza!

Sandflies are here now!!!!

Been testing loads of sprays etc.. The only one that seems to work for me is that Avon Skin So Soft (Dry Oil Spray).

They've started already in Lefkosa. the way I usually fight the little buggers is to go at them full force, I spray the bedrooms everynight with Raid making sure I get under the beds and behind the doors, I have the plugin liquid Not the tabets as these only work for about 6 hours, And just to be sure I have mossi nets on all the beds which I spray with fly spray as well. If you have an Air conditioner it helps, as does a fan as it blows them around.

After all this I usually manage to get a good nights sleep.

If I'm going out, I use the Avon so soft and that works too.

Good luck, and be perpared!!!

Kiwikid I spray like you every room with Raid then close doors, and with this amazing Avon product not been bitten yet, put it on every time I go out or sit on the balcony

Keithr I had a friend bring me some over but already used one of the sprays only 2 to go so must get some ordered worth giving the Avon rep over here a ring but make sure its the blue spray plastic bottle

Sheila - since I found out the stuff actually works (on me, anyway) I've become a bit paranoid. Like you, I slather on the whole range whenever I go out!!

Good advice Sheila it is better to be safe than sorry. What amazes me is my other half never seems to get nibbled! Could understand it if he slept in a different room or something! I obviously must be sweeter than

he is

Sheila - sorry, didn't express that very well. What I meant was I use the whole range of Skin So Soft stuff - shower cream, moisturiser, dry oil spray, etc. etc.

Cant't be too careful! Funny thing is, the mossies never bother me - just the other little sods

Take care. Sheila xx

All good and sound advice, i had a bad spell last year as did one of my kids, the rest were fine it puzzles me.

I was also advised to take a course of vitamin D, unsure why but i will experiment for sure this time round.

I am now going to try Avon skin so soft.

I take vitamin b1 tablets not vitamin d and personally they have made a huge difference in the amount of 'nasty' mossie bites i get. I can buy these from the chemist in Catalkoy, next to Donaghy and Beyler

I would say it must have started in April. As some people have stated the damp weather must have been to their liking. (Bites are not usually that much of a problem early on)

Within a week of returning home from N Cyprus (admittedly with only a few bites) I developed flu like symptoms without the runny nose and it was not pleasant.

Looking up the symptoms of Sand Fly Fever I could tick all but one of them. For my very first time I have had to take a week off work due to sickness - having returned it still levaes you feeling run down and weakand having to take a course of Anti Biotics.

I will be taking even more precautions to prevent getting it again - hopefully it will not be as bad the second time around should I be bitten again.

Sheila - a shame that it's too late for me to bring you some over, but my Avon catalogue was returned to the lady last evening. However, I could bring you some in September. It's not expensive at all, just a couple of pounds and they often have it on special offer.

Could we speak about it nearer the time if you're interested?

The-Wicks,

Avon website currently 5 x £3.00 per bottle + £3.50 postage = £18.50 (£3.70 per bottle)

Ebay (Avon agent) for 5 botles works out at £12.60 delivered (£2.52 per bottle)

What sort of specials do Avon do? Also I presume if you use ding dong Avon there is no delivery charge, yes?

Millzer - they have special offers on various products all the time - can't tell until the Ding Dong lady comes with the brochure. The main reason I offered to bring some over was someone told me that Avon stuff was more expensive in TRNC than here and, as Sheila pointed out, the problems with trying to get post.

RedSnapper - that's the flaming problem - you can't see them! You can't feel them when they land on you either! You only know they've been 'visiting' when you come out in a red, very itchy lump that turns into a blister-type thing. These leave red scars which can take ages to go. The other big problem is that some people get very bad reactions to sandfly bites - there were a lost of postings here, either last year or year before, when one chap had an adverse reaction and was the under the care of the hospital in UK for ages. They also manage to get through fly screens. As I said - you cant be too careful with the perishers.

J

Locals are bitten by them as well - it's not just 'us'

Blinkin`eck... they sure sound horrible little things. When i was there last Xmas i got quite a few bites and i thought they were mossies but some were worse than usual and sound like you describe.

I feel ill for two days and had flue like symptoms and someone told me it could be sand fly or Cyprus sickness. My pal got bitten on the legs whilst clearing the garden weeds last October and they swelled up and went really blotchy and then he fell ill and was laid up for a couple of days, might have been them...

Hi all I had sandfly fever last year and its not nice. I have been buying the blue and its only the blue which works on them. Sorry meant to say skin so soft. Its a lot more expensive here and no offers. Best to be safe though. I find the little buggers love pefume. Jean if its no problem could you get me a bottle aslo. Thank you. Firestarter where do you get the special gog collars please. Lilli xxx

Lilli

I was told exactly that. Evidently the pink dry oil gel and showergel etc doesnt seem to work.

If i see any special offers in the brochure from the ding dong Avon lady i will let you know on here but obviously that probably wont be a lot of help for you over there- if that makes sense?

Lilli - sorry it's too late for this time, but will stock up for September and hope none of you get bitten before then!!

RedSnapper - yes, they sound like sandfly bites certainly. The worry is that if you are one of the unlucky ones, won't know until you've been nobbled!!
