I have just watched the Speaker of the house of Commons try to fudge the issue of all the expenses claims, and quite frankly it was a disgrace. At the end of his speech most of the MPs walked out of the chamber.

It is a sad day for British politics when the speaker will not allow o debate on whether he will clean up parliament.

What would you expect, he's another of the scottish mafia running the uk, he's had his snout in the trough the same as rest of them.

It's a disgrace when we can be dictated to by sottish mps in our parliament and have no say in the running of theirs.

Wattys,

I'm Scottish and a nationalist and I agree with you.

I'd be much happier if we were independent and looked after our own business and left the English (whom I have nothing against and no problem with, note the lack of insults as I'm NOT a racist) to run their business.

I feel disgusted with the whole lot of them and Brown should resign. Can you imagine members of the public STEALING from a company they worked for and not being 'nicked'. I really thought that Gorbals Mick would resign today - how can he, after all that has been written and spoken on the news not resign he has no respect of himself or the British Taxpayer. Can you imagine if a bank robber is nicked, then says 'I will give the money back' and then he is let off. They should all be done for fraud. It is a wonder no one is outside the Palace of Westminster waving placards - they had enough to say at the G20 meeting.

This is the same man who spent our money by going to Court to prevent expenses details getting into the public domain in the first place. He's a disgrace and to think that at the end of his tenure it's always been a 'shoe in' into the House of Lords so it's little wonder he'll try to hang on, but if he'd had any decency at all then he would have resigned today.

Tony, i just had to see the Speaker try to defend his actions. I really thought that he would put the views of the general public before his survival instincts, but there you go

The actions of these so called 'honourable' gentlemen and ladies is nothing short of disgraceful. During my time in the forces I saw a number of occasions when people were caught fiddling their travelling expenses. Whilst the figures were generally only a couple of a hundred quid, no mercy was given regardless of rank. People with 20 odd years service and close to pension were dismissed from the service, losing all pension and gratuity rights. I see no difference here and any MP found to have claimed funds illegally should be immediately fired and lose any rights to their gilt edged pensions.

Sadly it will take GB to table the motion for the debate to get rid of MM...the man is morally bankrupt along with a lot of our mp's..bloody disgraceful.

He should have resigned today!, he has more power in the house than anyone else and that is why he can refuse the debate..outrageous.

Looks like some TRNC politicians can learn a bit from their UK colleagues.

Amazing btw how silent most board members are now that they face this shocking disgrace in the UK - while there's always enough to say about greed and rip-offs in TRNC.

PS. I suggest we don't use Mr. Michael Martin's initials "MM" - that's not fair to our one and only Marky Mark "MM" (aka mmmmmm or 6xm)...

PPS. For his fans: "our" MM is banned for a week, he informed me, but he'll be back soon...

It is as much his fault as it is the fault of those MP's who signed off their claim forms! This is just a side-treacking device to get the greedy MP's off the hook! The fact remains over 100 MP's so far have made exhorbitant claims which were paid! They (the MP's) the connived with their respective leadership to try and get around it by changing the rules on the 'Freedom of Information Act'. The fact that they failed - did not deter them from prevaricating the release of the information!

To my mind we have MP's with a vested interest to keep things as they are, leaders and systems who connive in the process whilst giving the world the notion that our parliament is the mother of democracy!

Fact: Most of the MP's are in it for themselves.

Fact: Most of the Conservatives have second jobs in the city or some non-executive directorship of companies and the Labour Party under Blair and Brown followed suit!

Fact: Those MP's who try to do the work for the people are marginalised!

The leaders of the main parties knew what was going on! It has been going on for the last 30 years! Since Thatcher put a stop to salary increases - the MP's devised an alternative way of getting a rise without telling the public! This was then 'monitored; by the H of C authorities who don't between them have an accounting qualification - and appointed by whom? The very same MP's who had their noses in the trough!

Now the scheming rascals want to hold one person responsible? Sure he has some responsibilty but so do ALL the others! Heads should roll! But they will not roll! They will prevaricate as they always do until the noise dies down and then it will be business as usual!

There is NO difference between the parties! As long as their lifestyles are like the celebs they are happy! Mark my words no matter how detailed the reform they will find a way around it!

Moover321 - I agree with most of what you say. I think Mr Martin has been made a scapegoat here. Of course it's been going on for years! I agree with you that all political parties are the same; there's not an honest one amongst them.

However, I do think (well, I hope) that this will NOT "die a death" like other government scandals have done. I think the Great British Public are up in arms about this - particularly in these cash strapped times, and I sincerely hope those responsible are taken to task.

I think they should all be done for fraud - the rest of us would have been!!

Phew................ that feels better!

I agree. Even when the dust dies down they will find a way to come out of this smelling of roses! The next move will be to award themselves a big fat wage rise to make up for the loss from their expense claims. What is even more grating is the way they have tried to justify their claims.

They should be allocated apartment type accommodation near to Parliament and given 3 canteen meals a day and no second home allowance should even exist. If they can't self regulate then this is the only way to make sue they remain accountable.

All of those MP,s, Prime Minister,Opposition Leaders who have been found to have claimed money illegally should be sacked and prosecuted. I do NOT believe in one law for some and another for the rest. If any member of the public was found to be doing the same as them, they would be prosecuted immediately.

I see Mr Cameron is urging the British public to petition for Parliament to be dissolved.Question..Would it have anything to do with possible further disclosures on his parties antics and he does not want to loose the lead he has in the polls and possibly loosing the election??? I dont think the Speaker will last the week.He will gently be reminded by the party leaders that it is time he stood down. I still have not seen a list of the ones who have not fiddled their expenses!!

Jean..I dont think the press will let this die just yet,its to big an issue...

Bachelbelly and the Wicks, I watched Question Time too. I was appauled at Beckett's arrogance, as if it was nothing. It is clear theft. The worst of her actions - being paid for Hanging baskets and gardening £600 - yeah right well she couldn't have done the job without them, now could she? An absolute disgrace. I was so enraged at her patronising attitude. I loved your comment on the pickaxe BTW. I too wished I had been in the crowd, but the electorate (as she was told) will have the last laugh at the polls in a couple of weeks time.

Labour or "new Labour" as they call themselves these days have never been the party of the working classes. They have always feathered their own nest. Their children don't go to state schools. You only have to look at their lavish lifestyles (now in the public domain) to realise that the days of fooling the honest working classes are long gone!!!

That should have read "the least of her actions" as opposed to the "worst of her actions". Sorry just watching Dispatches, and slightly distracted at the blatent dishonesty of the top bankers with their opulent lifestyles post credit crunch!!!

My God, they are all at it! I wonder if they have a unique "Club"!!

Coachie it is your sort of unfair and unbalanced views which tend to turn the general public against our hard working and totally above reproach MPs and their Shop Steward [sorry I meant the Speaker of the House of Commons]. Please remember that they are Honourable Members, and that all without exception have our best interests at heart. All of their expenses are fully justified- if you had a moat I'm sure you would agree.

It is a shame that a few have been villified for simple errors in their "accounting procedures". It is also awful that MPs efforts to prevent disclosure of their expenses, which should have been a private parliamentary matter, has now become "the politics of envy". I hope you appreciate that the actions of you, and people like you will lead to Margaret Beckett replacing the lost income by becoming a girlie magazine centrefold....................

Michael Martin is hardly just a scapegoat in all of this ...he is the man in charge of the fees office and he is well aware of what has been going on..he spent thousands of taxpayers money going to court to keep this from becoming public knowledge and he called in the police to find out who whistle blew to the telegraph..the man is a disgrace and he should resign his position immediately..along with many of the others including GB.

Margaret Beckett unfuriated me on Question Time, her damned smug ugly face looking down on everyone needs a good slapping!!

Well it now looks like Mr Martin has decided to do the right thing and go. He will make an anouncement to the house at 2.30pm uk time. Gordon Brown has just said that all Labour MPs who are found to have made false claims will be suspended from the Party until after the investigation has been completed, so it looks like the other parties will now follow. This could well turn out to be a time of revolution for Parliament the news hounds will be watching for any more hidden extras that MPs are claiming. And a good thing too. Maybe Britian will return to being a place to be proud of, but at the moment it still seems a long way off!!!

I say kick them out of Invercargill and Dunedin South of the South Island of NZ where they still speak with a Scottish accent and send them behind Hadrian's Wall where they belong! So much for integration and they can keep their precious black gold!

The UK is a morally corrupt society. - you only have to look at the den of thieves in Westminster to see what they've become. Money is the only thing anyone thinks about anymore. It's a 'what's in it for me' society. He should go now, not next week or next month..Now, and take all the other thieves with him.

Turtle..Dont shout to loudly, funnier things have happened before now.John Major did not expect to win his election but he did. Bit like these Claret fans who think it is a forgone conclusion that they will win at Wembley. Probably right on both accounts but its not over till the final whistle goes....

That,s an appropriate date for surrender. On the 21 June 1945 , Japanese forces on the Pacific island of Okinawa surrendered also, to the American troops.

No1..I hope you dont think that the UK government is the only corrupt one.The US has the biggest corrupt government in the world by all accounts. The expenses fiddling here is a drop in the ocean compared to the states and probably some of the EU countries as well..Perhaps we might see something come out about them, would be really interesting.I believe some of the fiddles going on with these MEP,s leaves alot to be desired as well...

But he isn't from Gorbals according to every published article about him, don't believe everything you read.

What I want to know is when we'll ever know anything about TRNC MPs expenses...The 12th of Never. People should quit moaning about UK at least it's a great democracy try living elsewhere like mainland middle east.

Don't think it will make a scrap of difference Martin resigning (some have wanted him out

for other reasons for a while, i.e. not the "old boys'" network. He has been made a scapegoat

to divert attention from the bigger faults of others. Yes, let's see a list of those who are free of

any unscrupulous misuse of expenses. Some are now saying it is "all of them" and that is a bad

sign if it puts them off voting. Perfect chance for the Greens though, (or the BNP) to gain power.

Incidentally, there is no shame in being born in the Gorbals (even if he wasn't) and I wonder if

anyone has seen it lately. Home to a wonderful theatre that the London critics rave about for one thing

Message 37 the UK is not morally corrupt !!

It is still one of the fairest and most decent places on the globe despite a "gutter "press newspaper industry constantly telly us otherwise.

For heavens sake if you believed everything you read in the Mail you would go mad.

This is still a decent country despite all its problems.

It's a pity there isn't a news media which reports all the good that is done.

As usual a very small minority do their best to spoil it for the rest of us !!

And , by the way, the TRNC and its people are also great.

I look forward to my annual holiday there - but as mentioned before there are those on both sides of the border who do their best to spoil things!!

Sod them all !!!!!

You are so right Littlejohn. If you really look at what is going on in other countries

we do compare very favourably. I know from good friends in Turkey, that there is

a lot of respect for our land. The tabloid press are good at depressing us, but we

can sort our own problems out, and I believe it will be a case of lessons learned.

I said the UK is not" morally" corrupt.

Politicians are another matter but I do not want to get into a long winded discussion on the subject.

Suffice to say that the alternative to the current gov does not fill me full of hope !!

Ever since we started scratching our arse, leaders, followers, mind your own business types, killers, child bearing, the young and the old, Theft, drugs, abuse, alchohol, money, poor, ...

Very unfair to only point our fingers at individuals albeit part of the greedy crew. This country has become a born again ... mess. So who is going to change it ... the people.

Yes, but how? Easier said than done. Most of us hate what we see which is such

a bad example for the young, who are the future.

MM was NOT made a scapegoat at all, he spent thousands trying to stop this information from coming out and he was in charge of the fees office, he is probably one of the most corrupt of them all...he called the police in the investigate who spilled the beans..the man is a bloody disgrace and are all of them.

good idea. While we're at it lets kick the Brits out of Cyprus, bloody foreigners nobody likes them anyway. Then lets kick the Irish out of England, the English out of Scotland and Wales, the Welsh out of non-Welsh parts, its not as if its a United Kingdom with common nationality is it?

I think the really thick and stupid people who make daft racist posts should be deported first. Well that's half the expat population out of the TRNC....

Got no problem with Scots/Welsh/Irish/others [apart from illegal immigrants] voting for what they want in England if they are resident. What is at issue is that parts of the UK can determine their own solutions to problems without the interference of Westminster, EXCEPT for England which has to take into account the views of all and sundry. That isn't racism, it's a level playing field.

Unless I'm very much mistaken [perhaps I am a "thick and stupid person"], I was under the impression that expats don't have voting rights in the TRNC. I assume "Malcy" is one of our brethren from North of the Border. If that is the case, perhaps he can come up with a justifiable reason why there shouldn't be an English Parliament that can legislate on exactly the same things that the Scottish Parliament does.

Bang on i totally agree with you. You should have your own parliament meaning independence for Scotland and England within the Commonwealth. What difference will it make as long as we all still have the queen on our stamps?
