So, a year and a half ago i get hit by a drunk driver with no drivers license and no insurance...a few days later he was back in Turkey, without so much as a slap on the wrist!! I, on the other hand was left fighting for my life in a hospital in a country that has no idea about pain relief...I won that battle, physically...but my mind was left somewhere in a gutter!

Then, after realising that there was going to be no pay out in insurance or anything else, it became apparent that i would have to go back to the UK to get follow up treatment on my leg (which i am so lucky to still have). The church in Kyrenia were too amazing for words...they helped me in ways i never could have thought possible...being a non-believer... with their help i began the second 'leg' of my journey to recovery...

I arrived in the UK mid January. I immediately went to a doctor who referred me to a consultant, who said it was time for all the metal to be taken out of my leg. FINALLY!!.....

...cont...

There was a light at the end of the tunnel...all i could think of was 'no more pain'....even just knowing it was going to be over soon, the pain i have carried for a year and a half was going to be over!! Then started the wait...18 weeks to be exact...it was long and sad, i missed my dogs and my friends soooo much that every day was a struggle, but i knew that it would all be worth it...finally i would be able to walk my dogs again and even get a job!!

The came the day of the surgery. I had to take a train to Birmingham from Northampton then i checked into a hotel to be prepared nice and early for my check in appointment at 7am. I was so excited, so amazingly happy, i found it impossible to sleep, so when 6am came around i was already dressed and ready to go to get my new leg!! I checked in at 6.45am. Then i had my obs taken, then i chatted to the sunny and delightful anaesthetist who told me exactly how i was going to go to sleep...

After him came an in depth conversation with the surgeon, who was also the type of man who i'd defy anyone to not trust..a truly super man!! Then he drew on my leg with a majic marker which i found absolutely marvelous!! When he left me i was giggling like a schoolkid, i felt like a kid at christmas!! I was even given some odd stocking to put on to stop thrombosis!! My surgery was set for 10.30am...At 3pm i was told the surgery was cancelled, and to go home!

I am now back in Northampton my face is so swollen from crying i can hardly see the keys! The surgeon has told me to come back and he will make me a priority...in July. I shall be coming home on the 31st May with a heavy heart and an empty pocket....I think it's time to go to bed now...

Daisy, all I can say is "Oh, b*gg*r"!

So sorry, this seems to hapen so much. Maybe it will brighten you up if I tell you that I went to see my German doc this morning, as I am flying to the USA in a few days time. Knowing how I can never sleep on a plane, I asked for a mild sedative to help me nod off on the 9 hour flight.

No problem, but she also gave me 2 syringes to inject myself with Heparin to avert thrombosis!

Arrggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!

Daisy - I can't tell you how sorry I am, I really can't. I also cannot tell you how disgusted I am, but unfortunately, I have heard of this happening so many times.

Small consolation, I know, but try to be brave - easier said than done.

With all good wishes. God night, God bless.

Daisy it is despicable. I don't know what is going on with the NHS? (I know they are not very popular at the moment) but it might be an ideal opportunity to contact your MP about the treatment you have received today, and get him to push it through to the front of the list. He or She may be grateful for the opportunity to actually have a good image/press. My Mum who is 80, was in hospital a couple of years ago and she needed a heart op. After 5 weeks of delays (whilst she was in hospital) I threatened to go to the press/MP/anything to get her the op she needed. Within 24 hours she had that operation, without her family even being notified. I had no advance warning. I know it is very hard in your situation, and you must feel very low, but my advice would be to shout the loudest. There are so many here who abuse the system, the UK is sinking from those that do, and manipulate it very well to their own ends. If I can be of any help here, please phone me on 07512491845.

Take care. x

I don't know you other than from your posts here, but I feel so sorry for you - and hope the next time you are booked in, it all goes to plan.

The NHS appears to be going to hell in a hand basket. I was in Hospital last month, was put in the wrong ward, so the Consultant didn't come to see me. When the Dr did his rounds on the fourth day, he asked me why I was in that ward!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I pointed out I had been telling the Nurses all along I had been sent to the wrong place - the Dr then said he would refer me to the consultant but that it would take five days for the referral to reach him, I said that is dreadful, I would be taking up a bed for nothing. People on the ward were dropping like flies - two bathrooms, one out of order, the other, the drain was blocked. I started to feel ill, signed myself out against medical advice - too late - I am still feeling debilitated, having contracted Clostridium C Diff - I am VERY angry - and have yet to see the Consultant!

I am so sorry to hear of your story Mrs G.

Incidents like this are a national disgrace. We are supposed to have one of the best health services in the world. When my mum was in hospital and I was showering her every night (no help from the nursing or auxillary staff there), I cleaned all of the shower, floor, doors and anywhere I could wipe with a bottle of bleach beforehand.

These days, there are just too many incidents like this in the UK.

The hospitals are filthy places and you fear for your life being admitted.

Bring back the matron regime in hospitals. They were clean places then.

I do hope you are much much better soon, and get the treatment you deserve, and have paid for.

Take care of yourself xx

Have you thought about suing them, or again contacting the MP for your area?

Daisy - unfortunately this is typical of the NHS. The system is at bursting point as there are too many people going to the UK and abusing the system. I'm sorry to hear this has happened to you. It's no consolation but when the system works it works very well. Have patience and keep your chin up.

Tara - thanks for your kind words, am still in 'strong' correspondence with Wexham Park Hos - though I feel Daisy has come off worse than I. To have sunk so much money into going 'home' to be failed so spectacularly, to have her hopes risen, to then be so cruelly dashed is awful. Daisy, does the Consultant not have a cancellation list? One would think so, people cancel operations for all sorts of reasons - did he give you a reason why your operation was cancelled? Could you be referred to another Consultant, another hospital? Was he made aware you had flown home especially for this treatment, and aware of all that that entailed for you personally.

I would urge you to explore all possibilities before you go back to Cyprus - right now, ring your Dr, your Hospital, the Consultant - those who shout loudest will get heard before those who accept the unacceptable - which this is, but because you are (understandably) feeling so dispirited, you may not have thought of the above.

Hello everyone

First of all thank you so much for all your kind words, it was very comforting to read them, i didn't feel quite so alone...still desperate, but not alone.

The surgeon secretary called me just now to say how very sorry (again) they all were, and she has a new date or me, 1st of June...which ordinarily would be fabulous, but i have my ticket booked for Cyprus the day before. I can not alter the ticket as it is non transferrable, and i certainly am unable to buy a new one, so the only thing to do now is to come back to Cyprus and try to save up enough to come back in July.

This was simply an admin problem, all of the day procedures were actually overnight stays, and they had run out of beds.

If it were me, ring the Hospital back immediately - and take that date offered for surgery (if at the end of the month, you cannot take it up - oh well - they messed you around, you are entitled to keep all your options open until the bitter end) then see if you can sell your return ticket - advertise on all and any Boards; write to the Airline and say you appreciate the ticket is non-transferable, but explain in detail your circumstances and ask if they can bend the rules, offer a reduction on a new booking - can they come up with ANY solution to your problem - ask the Hospital if there is a cancellation list - you never know........explain your plight in detail to the Surgeon in writing also - explore all possibilities - DON'T give up - one never knows what tomorrow may bring..........after all, the Hospital came up with an alternative date, they may well do so again - think 'pester power' - good luck

actually, don't write to the Airline, tempus fugit, RING the Airline, right now.........if a transfer would be an extra £100 (say) that would still be cheaper than a whole new return flight in July.......and RING the Hospital........
