I think you might find that we are not "allowed" to protest as such and might even be arrested.

We don't exist according to the authorities.

We would certainly be arrested, charged and most likely deported for insurrection. This government does not tolerate such things. Neither does Turkey, look at the Kurdish situation for instance.

Foreigners are not "allowed" to protest as such and might even be arrested.

However if people wish to gateher together and drive at a slow pace arround kyrenia or to lefkosia then it would jsut be a gathering going to a certain place to have a drink and a chat .

One of my favourite phrases is: "We have to agree before we can disagree", in other ways we have to know what we are talking about before we can sensibly express an opinion.

My question is: What are we protesting about? Are we protesting about some "guesses" that I have made or for something that is undeniable?

Ismet, I thought it was only the "two leaders" who agree to disagree.

Message 1. Only citizens can make a public protest.

Last year some expats gathered together with banners to protest about the use of poisons in North Cyprus and its effect on pets and wildlife, a petition was handed in to the the relevant Ministry. It was reported on tv and in the newspapers. It was very peaceful and no one was arrested although I am sure we were watched! How would it have looked if we were had been carted off in police vans with the cameras rolling?

TRNC citizens do not have to obtain a permission for any peacefull demonstration, its a constitutional right. Others must apply and obtain permission prior to any demonstration. Green Peace members often break the local laws in many countries because they have strong convictions. No comment on that one but my question remains: What are we protesting about?

Lets just get some Greek Cypriot flags and burn them while sipping a nice cup of earl grey and nibbling on a nice digestive.

Similar to the difference between tax avoidance and tax evasion, 7 years in nick! Not allowed to demonstrate or remonstrate as we are foreigners in a Country that doesn't exist!

of course the authorities would argue that the Turkish Cypriots are having a hard enough time of it already without foreign second home owners making a pest of themselves.

The usual response on this board when people complain about corruption, inefficiency etc is "well no one asked you to come here, you can always go home." Hope there's no hypocrisy or double standards here from some people, you should suppport the TRNC through thick and thin if you are committed to this place.

msg 25,

as an expat don't expect any support from the TCs ( or Turks as they are now the majority and their government is in power). When it comes to a settlement for Cypriots they wont want to know. If you did an opinion poll I think many foreigners would feel like packing up. Sorry but foreigners dont figure here and they have no constitutional rights. not my opinion but reality.
