Some friends have had to go back to England for health reasons and their temporary residency is due to expire before they can return. Does anyone know what the implications are when they return?

This happened to a friend of ours last year. When he arrived back at Ercan, customs kept him there until friends managed to have a collection and pay the 2000ytl fine for his residency being out of date. They wouldn't even let him try to get some of the money from an ATM.

It was the final straw for him he is due to leave the island for good in the next 2 weeks.

That is exactly why, having left TRNC to live elsewhere, I am concerned about returning for a holiday. Logically there should be no problem, but where does logic come into it in TRNC?

It is possible to apply a month before it was due to expire,, was this possible for your friends to do. I went to Uk whilst mine was being processed and was given a letter from Girne Police station immigration.

Unfortunately for my friends they have been delayed due to serious illness. They had intended to come back before the residency expired but unfortunately their return date has had to be delayed. It would seem so unfair after going through what they have to return and be arrested or fined. There must be something that can be done.

No way, If they have left before the annual expiry date all that happens on their return is a 90 day stamp which gives time to renew backdated to the last date of temporary visitor visa. If they left after the expiry date they will be fined but their fault for not putting matters in place beforehand. However, if over 65 no resident visa is required but the Government keeps quiet on that one! Too much money at stake!

Hi Brinsley,

That is interesting not requiring a residency visa over 65. Where did you get this information and have you got this in black and white?

Ask your friends to phone TRNC Consulate just to see if they can offer any advice

Nothing is black & white here except the odd bottle of whisky! Yes, but you need to find a damn good Advocate in Lefkosa who knows the constitution and what is actually on the statute books. I tried to sue the incumbent administration but got nowhere on that one! Best to have tried and failed than not to have tried at all!

After 6 years, I let mine run out, I return about every 3 months and stay the 90 days which is the visa I get on re-entry, I've never had a problem about the residence visa running out, mind you, I am over 65, so maybe that bit of info is correct???
