North Cyprus, places to visit and see - Buildings, Landscape, Pubs and Restaurants, Beeches, Historical, Curious, View, Interesting, Dive areas, Fishing, Sport, Off the Beaten, Shops, Clubs ... No 1 - St Hilarion Perched high in the Kyrenia mountain range, overlooking the Mediterranean and the surrounding areas of North Cyprus, stands the castle of St Hilarion. Reputedly the inspiration for Walt Disney's 'Sleeping Beauty', the castle remains one of the best preserved of all the Crusader Castles, thanks mainly to the work of the North Cyprus Antiquities Department.

The Mavi Kosk is well worth a visit. It is an old house which has been preserved since the 1950's. It belonged to a GC gun runner. You will find it on the way to Guzelyurt. Not open Mondays. Take your passport as in an army area Cost 2tl. flossie44

We went to Mavi Kosk a couple of weeks ago and had a super trip. We were lucky enough to have a guide that spoke super english and made it fun as well. Well worth a trip and we only went because members of this forum had previously suggested it. Thanks to everyone who posted this as a good place to visit.

Visited Mavi Kosk (Blue House) on 4 visits to Kyrenia, well worth the visit, if there are Turkish visiitors the guides speak in both languages, the guides are lads who are serving in the army, sometimes the army band is playing in the grounds. You need passport to give to the guards on the gate and get it back when you leave.

Last time we sat in the tree tops restaurant, it was yummy. The smell from the plants, the aroma was intoxicating. A song was played and then the emotions flooded. My wife shaz lost her mum six months earlier. A song she used to sing and whistle, from child hood days. Not bad natural singers, cousin ' Rosmary Joshua' sang to us all on the night of the millenium. Shaz my wife works in a job centre, she has done for many years, a most thankless but on occasion rewarding job. Thats the kind of person she is, a yummy. But i could not put up with the shite. Our meal was perhaps, and our wine was served in the most basic jug. Our eyes, hearts, souls and whatever else wanted too, allowed a great cry. Awesome place.

No - 18. Understanding. NOn July 20th, 1974, Turkey had to intervene to Cyprus as one of the peace Guarantor Powers (Turkey, Greece, Britain) on the Island according to International Treaties of 1958 in Zurich and 1959 in London, to end a coup sponsored by Greek paramilitary group EOKA (Ethniki Organosis Kyprion Agoniston, National Organization of Freedom Fighters) and still continues to maintain military presence there with the Cyprus Turkish Peace Forces connected to the Aegean Army.o - 18

At some places if you say "yerli" = local, you will pay local prices. I did this at Girne castle, St.Hilarion and some of the places in Lefkosa. It helps if you can also say Girne'de oturuyorum or yas(h)iyorum ( I am living in Girne) or just add your town. ........'de(da) oturuyorum etc. I didn't get asked for my residency booklet but it might be useful if you take it. That is of course if you live here and aren;t just on holiday !

No .. 21 Choir If you get a chance, ask the guys to sing ' Its a working man i am'. Very moving. Many artists know the song and sing it with passion, Tom Jones included. Last time i heard it live, an irish band on request in a pub in Sligo, west coast of ireland. I have a copy by an artist called David Alexander and it still leaves the hairs on my back standing, now i listen to it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEhS4FKBCSA
