I don't usually do this, but I thought I would so nobody else would get ripped off.The new salon called Escada in Alsancak, near Pizza King is a total rip off.I went to have my hair highlited, the girl in there wrote down that it would cost me 150ytl, then when I went to have a wash and blow dry before then, she said because you are going to have 3 colours it will be 180ytl, so I agreed. When I went on Friday, had it done, but only 2 colours, then went to pay she said 280ytl, well I had quite a argument with her (as you can guess) she kept saying it was because I had 3 colours and because it took 3 hours, well in the end I paid 250ytl, I should have learned my lesson really, because the very first time I went into that salon was to have some gel nails, which she charged me 120ytl and that very evening 3 came off.Anyway as I told her that would be the last time I ever go there and that I would tell my friends.

Will stay clear of that one, the best one that I would recommend is Naj at Cutting room, always states a price and never differs from it, then you know before going how much its going to cost you.

I had the same experience from Hair Studio when ever I asked how much high lights etc would be it was always a lot dearer when they finished although I never asked for any extras, total rip off.

I dont think there is price list in any hairdressers here, everytime I went to Hair Studio I looked at my price prior to going but it was always different when you go to pay, I say whoever is on the till charges what they think, we need to stand up for ourselves and pay whats on the list and nothing more also tell them you will not be back, how many times can they do it before they realise hey we are doing something wrong AGH

Im sorry to hear this news as they have the shop next door to us. I have asked for prices for people many times and she writes it down on a slip of paper. I just wish that they would have a price list on display. The lack English sadly and rely on turkish speaking customers. They are all very nice and the guy is a good hai.rdresser Im just so sorry for have been overcharged.I feel all the hairdressers and beauticians here have doubled thier rates recently. Where you pleased with the result xxxxx

Lilli....msg 8....the only reason for an establishment NOT having a price list on display is so they can charge what they like, and in particular exploit tourists.

It may be an idea to have a quiet word with your neighbour and let them know the effect of negative publicity on here.

Hi Lilli

Velli is a brilliant hairdresser and he is a very nice person. I have been going there maybe once or twice a week for a wash and blowdry and have been very pleased.I am pleased with the highlights but because SHE has ripped me off it has now left a sour taste and even if they were the only hairdressers on the island, never, never would I go there again, so they have lost my custom, my friend said let me know how the highlights go, if they are good, she was going to have hers done, when I got home from there, I phoned her and said don't even go there, when I told her the story, she said she would'nt, so that's another customer SHE has lost.i

I go to 'Joels of London' in Girne, always a good job always the same price. They have a price list and talk English so you get what you want.

At that price you could almost fly home on a cheapie ticket and get your hair done! Its an absolute rip off. Things like that are so bad for custom ...she will rue the day as this story will spread through the ex pat community and no sane woman will go there.

She is getting everything she deserves

Wife went into a hairdresser the day before to check the language barrier would not be an impediment to what she wanted, evidently a woman getting hair hands and toes done is a major operation.Told them what she would be wanting, asked the price ,saying she would be back in the morning.

The bloke told her he would give the "locals" rate. Dont know how much cheaper that was to other places but the wife was delighted with the service ,price (which was cheaper than UK) and end result. The initial colouring was a bit redder than she would have liked,no problem with them doing again.

End result, a happy customer who will be a repeat customer from now on.,Wifes happy and they are happy. Some establishments just dont get it,"repeat customer" is not in their vocabulary

Dont know the name but its halfway up Sehitler street on the right before the mini market.

I went in on Friday to get a price for a body perm rather than a really curly one,and was quoted 175 lira, but he reallly didn't understand what I was trying to say. It might have been Floss in their when I went in.Then went to place opposite Lemar, the blue building and was quoted 125 lira, and he understood exactly what I meant by a body perm, so you can imagine where I made the appointment. Always have gone to Neil, but find in the summer, with the whole place just glass windows, I can't deal with the heat and the glare from the sun. Have not been to the Cutting room because if something happens and you can't make the appointment, they still charge you full price, even if you ring to explain, unless you give 24 hours notice.

Are there no English trained hairdressers on the island who could start a mobile or permanent business or is it to much hassle and red tape???

I also went to Escada just the once, also had very expensive highlights but to be fair i think the price is about the same all over now, i paid 180 tl in Lefkosa. I was the only customer in Escada and the only time i was spoken to was when they wanted to sell me the aftercare products which i declined.

It is a shame because being so close to where i work it is so handy but not sure i could face going back.

Most of these so called hairdressers have never been trained to UK standards. One that has is Nulten. She is just the best and I have been going to her for almost 5 years now. She cannot be faulted. Also trains new hairdressers to City and Guilds Diploma Standards. She has a price list up there for all to see, no secrets prices.

I think Teresa is right about this - its the same in most with the higher prices

Highlights of 1 colour at two different salons here cost me 200TL in December and English run salon 210TL in April Would not go to either again

Stellastar your quote regarding the Cutting room is totally untrue. Me and my wife have been going to the Cutting Room for over three years and have had to cancel at short notice on many occasion and have never been charged for this. If you have not been then how can you say this. I actually think that people should charge if you cancel your appointment at short notice after all this time is booked out especially for you.

Fortunately the cutting room does not charge for cancelling appointments even at short notice.

At those prices it looks like a quick trim and a d.i.y. colour from the supermarket, no way will I pay 150 tl for a hairdo.

Tonyhickey - Joels is off the fountain roundabout , right if coming from west - straight up - pass the road to Kibtek and it is on the right over a few speed bumps and opposite a bit of waste ground where you can park. I have full head colour, trim and blow dry 115tl Both Alan and Mandy UK trained.

Ataturk

I have been going to NAJ for a long time at Cutting Rooms and I have only had to cancel once but she is not the sort of person to charge you if you had a reason to cancel, but I for one would agree that they should charge if you deliberately dont give a good reason so she could book another client in. In my opinion you cant beat her colouring and cutting and I have tried most of the hairdressers here.

Why do women pay so much for their hair doo, why do hairdressers charge so much for the service it sounds very overpriced to me.

My daughter went to Joels and was very happy with the results and the price. No language barrier and they knew what they were doing.

My highlights in the UK with 2 colours and cut and blow dry costs me £53!

As a regular customer of the Cutting Room for 2 years I must also say that Nac has never charged me for a cancelled appointment (and I have had to cancel more than once at short notice). Not only do I go there but on my recommendation my brother and 3 of my freinds go there, and I am certain they will all tell you the same. She is an excellent hairdresser, honest, up-front and she certainly does not take money from people for nothing.

I would not entertain going to anyone else.

Last Saturday I had my hair coloured at the new salon in Ozankoy on the main road called Mos, the staff there are really friendly and the guy who did my hair was great. It cost 80 TL, highly recommend it. Also a beauty salon and unisex hair dresser.

Hi Ataturk, Have you read their business card? It says quite clearly that they will charge the full price unless given 24 hours notice. Of course I agree that it is fair to charge if people just don't turn up, but I get migraines which can appear quite suddenly, so cannot risk going somewhere that says in black and white that they will charge you. I would never just not turn up, but I have had to ring Neil once to say I was ill and couldn't make it, and he was fine about it.

As some of you are aware I am a haırdresser and I work for Neil: the price we charge is 170 tl for Hi - lites this includes a cut and blow - dry ( however many colours you want - I do not really understand why you have to pay more money to have more than one colour - you use the same amount of colour no matter how many different shades are used )

stellasstar1: I go to the cutting room and i was there today, fantastic service and coffee !! i took one of Naci's cards and looking at it i am either blind or i cant read as there is no mention of payment for cancellation on there..

dozza67: You quoted that there is no UK trained hairdressers bar one here but i can quote you on that and tell you that Naci from the cutting room is a fully qualified UK hairdresser. and if you have ever been to the salon you can not miss the two price list both in visible places.

So i would like to ask both of you to back up what you say and provide us with proof or simply change your source of information.

like i and many others have said on this forum: if you have experienced it say it out loud for everyone to know if not stop spreading rumors!!!

Tonight I went for a meeting with Ruyam and her husband to express my feelings regarding the price for the highlights, they have stood by their price they have charged, but they have now said that they are now going to introduce a price list that will be displayed in the shop and also said they are going to have some hand leaflets printed that will display their prices, I told them that the price they were charging was still too expensive, if they wanted to draw english people, they must reduce their prices. They apologised to me and said if I went in to them, they would do cut and blow dry at complimentry price. They have asked me if I would help them and get some prices, so that they can get in line with all other hairdressers. They said they want English people to go there and they do not want to rip them off. I have been more than happy with Velli, one of the stylists, the way he has done my hair in the past, he is very professional and entertaining to see him blow dry your hair.

nothing has changed, but I thought usually, people just let things go and forget about it, but I could'nt, so I found out who owned it and decided to speak to them and maybe try to educate them and to let them know that their prices are well over the top, after all we are in TRNC not the UK.

Who says they are using me, they merely asked, I did not reply.and also in IloveKKTC message, where did I say I was now happy with them, I was just letting everyone know wha was said at the meeting.I said I was happy and always have been with the stylist Velli and that will never change, credit where credit is due and he only works for them.

I was really upset to read your first message because i have been going to the same hair dresser ever since its opened.İv been living in Cyprus for 8 years and been to a lot of hair dressers believe me the prices are the same every where and no body has a price list. Also the products they use are all really good quality compared to other hair dressers so i think its worth paying a little bit extra.İ can recommend Escada hair dresser to both English and Turkish costumers that want good quality.

Please forgive me for this, but I have been lead to believe, both from Hairdressers and The Press, that the prices they charge are set by their Trade Union - regardless of their overheads for rent etc!

Have I been misinformed and they can charge what they like?

Sue.

Re: my message 52. Perhaps I should elaborate a little here. I HATE being ripped off, and believe me I have been - both in the UK and TRNC. We probably all have, but hopefully we live and learn. The point I was alluding to is something along these lines. We have acquaintences in TRNC whom we meet up with most years. We all use a tiny, not grand, little restaurant which is cheap and cheerful. I'll give the name, it is called 'Dostlar' in Alsancak. It's not remotely posh, but, the food is great, everything freshly prepared, and the proprietors are the nicest people you could wish to meet. Our friends had one 'bad' experience there - said they were rushed - and then proceeded to tell everyone they met not to go there. This is a small, family-run business doing their best. Because the people I refer to have been going to NC for 20+ years, people took their advice and stayed away. 2 weeks later, guess where said were eating and saying "We had a lovely meal at Dostlar". Hi Nidya

I was sorry to hear that my first message upset you but,

just to let you know that I have contacted a few hairdressers, to ask for the price for exactly the same thing as I had done in Escada and believe me non were as expensive as Escada and also they use good quality products, one of the hairdressers was Nulten Oral and from 4 that I contacted the prices ranged from 148ytl to 180ytl and 3 of them have their prices displayed on their counters. As I have said from the begining I had no problem with the way they done my hair, I was pleased, but it was just purely the expensive price.I don't mind paying a little bit extra, but not 100ytl extra.

Stella I totally agree I am standing here with Naj card in front of me and there IS NO mention of a charge for cancelling, but out of politeness its something you do.

Her qualifications will be shown in her results, she is a bubbly person who makes you feel at home, coffee to die for and the end results are great.

If I could name and shame the hairdressers I have tried I would be banned on this board, so look at results then condemn that person, make up your own mind.

Yep I have a Cutting Room card as well, and there's nothing about charging on it.

Please read my message again. I did not say that there were no UK trained hairdressers.

Maybe it was their leaflet I saw it on, but I know I saw it somewhere when I went to the shop. I went in to make an appointment, and when I saw that, I didn't make it. In fact I came straight back and told my friend about it. This was 3 or 4 months ago, maybe its changed now, in which case I',m sorry I even mentioned it. I wasn't complaining about them and I certainly didn't mean anyone to get upset about it, so sorry I spoke. Can we leave it at that now please.

Chinaeyes I spent 2 years looking for the right hairdresser and I would agree with Smithy about Naj. Luckily I took the advice of someone on here and went to see her and I am now completely happy with both cut and colour. In case you missed the name it is Cutting Room in Kyrenia near the new harbour.

Neil Antony at the new harbour in Girne is excellent and the girls that work for him are great as well, not too expensive and always do a really good job.

Try Gez at GHD on the main road in Alsancak. He's British and does a great job - the only thing is he seems to be constantly booked up so its best to book well in advance. His prices are really reasonable and he does what you ask too!

As far as I know with my limited turkish an d thier limited english I beleive its been resolved. I would not want to see this saloon suffer as they are so lovely and wil go out of thier way to help. I think she will now get a price list. I do hope so but I beleive that 3 colours are priced differently if its on long hair at least thats what i understand they said.I hope you give them a chance because they are now aware ask before. and im sorry for floss. Ahe knows they are good and floss you have identified the need to check. Had my hait cut and blow dry last night 40tl and my god my hair was long. I dont think thats bad. I know she is upset as she has been asking everyone for Uk prices. I can tell you and Im fussy and Floss herself will tell you he is a good hairdresser and god love him he is trying to learn english. Every day he comes to me to explain words. Ok have a go as I cant or my laptop wont spell. Im going back to get a job as a proof writer xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
