| Mathew Harpster, from the university in Famagusta will give a presentation "The Marine Archeology of Cyprus on Monday 3 March at the Five Fingers Restaurant, Ozankoy. Entrance is free. The following is a brief outline. ""The combination of increasing tourism, development and international isolation means that maritime cultural heritage along the northern Cypriot coastline, such as shipwrecks, harbours, or other artifacts of maritime activity, have an increasingly delicate future. A new educational program aimed at the diving community begun in October of 2007, and supported by the Nautical Archaeology Society of Great Britain, is slowly securing the future of this cultural resource by providing an internationally-recognized certification program that teaches businesses and individuals both how to protect maritime heritage, and why it is important to do so. This program, however, is only a first step and it cannot work in isolation; greater success will be achieved with the support of the northern Cypriot community as well. The aim of this talk is to present the details of the training program, as well as discuss possible routes that the wider northern Cypriot community may pursue to similarly protect and preserve approximately 10,000 years of maritime heritage along the coastline." This is one of a series of presentations about Northern Cyprus Archeology and we hope for a good attendance to encourage interest in the future. |
