Hi

Taking into account all the costs involved ie custom fees, mot, emissions test, first registration, road tax, number plates, hours of your time & anything else they can think off ,the total cost to us for a 2007 1.6 Astra was £5000

also you get a nice red stamp on the log book so you cant sell it until 2 years after import date (stops you making an instant profit)

Plus the cost of getting the car here

Hope this gives you a general idea

Paul

Pop in and see the customs on Nicosia ring road if you have had the car from new you might stand a chance Also talk to Olytrans the have all the details and look at the post from chatalkoykid he gives the cost breakdown the bigger the engine the bigger the bill.plus a diesel penalty on some stuff I read

Paul, I was told about that 3 year age limit. Found out it was 5 years. I shipped a June 2004 Zafira over in Oct 2007. It cost me 3,850 gbp in UK. 125,000 miles on clock. My mate drove a July 2004 Zafira over that he paid 6,500 gbp for in UK, only 12,500 miles on clock. We both paid about 2,500 pounds import duty. I shipped mine over with Olaytrans at a cost of 1,250 pounds. Could have done it cheaper but it was in a container on it's own.

I loaded it to the gunwhales, even the passenger seat. Olaytrans took me to the docks and cleared the car in about an hour. I paid nothing on the goods loaded inside. Supposed to use Glasses guide to work out duty but mileage wasn't even checked. Get in touch with Olaytrans, they'll give you all the proper info, would certainly use them again.

About 18 months ago I brought my 9 year old volvo S70 over with the intention of keeping it here,I used it for a year and then had to decide to pay the import duty or take the car off the island. I duly went to customs in Nicosia and was quoted £6,500 to keep it here.the way they calculate their figures is this,if your car has any value they will base their decision on the value, that works out at 65% of it's value, in my case as the car was worth very little they made their calculations on the size of the engine and as it was a 2.5 the tax they wanted was way in excess of the car's worth so I took it back to the UK.The best thing is to sell your car in the UK and buy over here, there are loads about, unless of course you have money to throw away.

Neg Nik's right buy one here, you will save yourself some money, after paying sea freight and then import duty you'll have quite a bit to fork out, sell your car in the UK and buy one here, you'll save a small fortune.

Having imported a car recently, I can agree that it just isn't worth it. Beware on the having a year to pay the import duties point. If you import furniture/goods as well, you only have a month to sort your car out from the date it arrives in NC, not 12 months. Customs/police have had a field day over the last 3-4 months seizing just about every UK plated car they could find. I think the majority of these have been auctioned off at secret auctions.

the auctions still secret then ?

i agree don't do it unless you have plenty of cash to throw away.

a friend just brought in a bmw cab and his duty is about 12k on it, to be paid.(and he is in the trade)

Hi Paul,

My only suggestion:

1) Sell your car and buy one from here. Certainly NOT worth the headache!!!!

All the best
