IngridL, Be careful what you ask for as it could be misunderstood by relevent the authorities... As most chemistry A Level students will tell you, if you mix veg. oil, lye & methanol, through a process of transesterification, you wlill produce biodiesel & glycerin, the later of which being a base requirement in the art of bomb making...

Middle Easter, Thank you for the warning. However, I have no intention of making bombs and I don't think the authorities believe anybody is stupid enough to advertise bomb making on the board. Glycerine can also be used in soap making or as a sweetener in low calorie foods to name a couple of other uses. Both would interest me more than bombs. There is enough violence in the world. There is also enough CO2 and other greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, which is the reason I am interested in the making of bio diesel. So, if anybody could tell me where I can get lye and methanol I would be very happy! I too want to drive a car that smells of potato chips!

That hurt... All my adult life I've lived and worked in this country, but yes, you are right, this is not my home country... I have not been in the country where I was born for 8 1/2 years, so that is not my home country... I don't really belong anywhere. I am planning to spend the rest of my life here, though, and I should make the best of it... We must think of the next generation. I do realise I've asked this question in the wrong place to the wrong people in the wrong language. A pharmacy or chemical supplier is probably more likely to know where I can find what I am looking for. And I would not start making bio diesel on a commercial basis without the required documentation or first finding out where I stand legally.

IngridL Apologies if any upset, I do not know your background. However with the militerised situation in the TRNC you have to realise the tensions that exist. For instance, even in the UK the London Bombers were first tracked because of buying up of large quantities of methanol & then the 2 acids that when distilled with glycerin make nitroglycerine. In terms of getting a license to make biodiesel commercially, this I am sure would be a huge issue in terms of bureaucracy in TRNC, and also the zoning of where you would be allowed to make it, plus the duty to be charged. Apologies for the lack of confidence, but this is the likely outcome.

IngredL, I see you have stopped looking but you comment on you wanting a car that smells of chips got me thinking - I know absolutely nothing about bio diesel or/and its production (not damn good at making bombs either so we can stop that one straight away) but I know that one of my mates in the UK used to run his car - old Peugeut 206 - on old chip fat that he got from his local chippy. Given the amount of veg oil used by cafe's and places out here there must be gallons of the stuff just chucked away down the drains every day. Would old veg oil meet your requirement? Just a thought.

Thank you guys! waddo, Exactly! Bio diesel can be made out of used cooking oil. To run a car on used oil you would need to modify the car and the effect would not be as good. But if you make bio diesel out of the oil (using the chemicals I was looking for) there is hardly any difference in effect and no modifications are needed. You use it like ordinary diesel!
