Our beloved street dog Foxy was unfortunatly poisoned this morning. A neighbour knocked on our door to say he was shaking, panting fast, obviously had had serious dharriea (sp?) and had either been sick or foaming at the mouth. Me and my neighbour rushed him straight to Garfields vet (who were EXCELLENT!) and thank god we'd got him there in time and he pulled through.

We live on a side road just before Hos Bes supermarket in Lapta so I urge everyone to be careful. We did go out and check for poison but couldnt find anything.

Unfortunatly because we know feel if would be best if we try to find Foxy a home as none of us can take him in, theres more dogs than people here already!

Foxy is about a year and a half old, he was castrated by KARS and tagged. He is alsation sized, is golden brown and, as his name gives away, looks just like a fox. He has a lovely temperment, would be suited to familys with children. He is very placid and friendly. He will bark if someone......

Im so sorry to hear he was poisoned but soooo so glad he pulled through. I hate to think of these street dogs being poisoned and dying in pain. Good on you for getting him there in time. Unfortunately i cant take him as i have a cat who hates dogs! I hope you find him a loving home though.

Thanks Trudy and Lilli, I too hope we find him a good home too, I wish we could take him in but with 2 and a half (we look after our neighbours dog for 3 months a year!) its impossible, though we treat him just like our own.

Will be putting pictures up tomorrow, so again if anyone can help or knows someone who can please contact me.

Am so sorry - there just seems to be no escaping it... Do you know if it was mountain side or sea side? We live just down the road near Sempati and have a dog who has just recovered from poisioning a month or so ago... will be extra vigilant - thanks for the heads up!

Hope someone can help you to find a loving home for him...

Hi Spanna

We're coast side just before Hos Bes market and Foxy doesn't wander far so we're assuming it was poison deliberately planted in this area :-( Please be extra vigilant when walking your pets and please please look out for the street dogs too

I note that all us dog owners in Karsiyaka are expected to take our dogs along on the 11th or 12th June to see the Belediye vet who will charge us 35 + 10 TL for EACH of our bitches to administer a worming tablet which we do anyway. I wish some of this ripped-off money would go towards catching the scumbags who drop this poison.

I'll second that Mark, and how about the other scumbags who think its fine to dump poor defenceless dogs to be at the mercy of these phsyco poisoners?

Update on Foxy,Jade and Brian(our saint of a neighbour ) took him down to Firdez this morning as he is still desperately ill, another 9 injections, fluid drip and blood test,he's back now but will need to see Firdez again tomorrow ,should have blood test results back Monday when we'll know just what poison has been fed to this amazing plucky dog and exactly what we're battling!

Jade is distraught right now ,but does want to thank everyone for the concern shown to her fourth favourite buddy,if anyone is on a mission to "save em all" my daughter is in the running

The "scumbags" as you call them who actually dumped this dog were in fact KAR. The unofficial policy adopted is that dogs are "dumped" into areas where expats live on the off chance that the expat community will feed and care for these "community" dogs. Animals lifted in Essentepe for example are regularly dumped in Lapta and Alsancak and Catalkoy and Ozankoy. Favourate dumping ground is behind Bells Foods.

If you are blighted by barking packs of dogs and ripped open rubbish sacks then this may be where the problem starts.

Sorry Mr Vince in this case you are so wrong,Foxy was "dumped" here last November, very definitely Not by Kars.He was close to starvation when he was ejected very early one morning from a car whose driver was obviously either late for work or very anxious not to be seen.Scumbags!!

At our request Kars did collect Foxy for castration and ear tagging and we were fully aware he would be returned to our community because KAR are so impossibly overcrowded.

Foxy is NOT a pack dog nor a barker unless someone is around who shoudn't be.He doesn't scavenge or tear open rubbish bags because he is fed and cared for by our community.

Animal welfare groups have demonstrated outside the Ministry of Agriculture in South Nicosia and are trying to shame the Government into taking responsibility for all the strays, abused, poisoned and abandoned animals. South Cyprus has a dreadful track record of same. We need to do the same here as Kar cannot cope with all these problems, as we've seen with the neuter and release policy, disgraceful. I have only been here a year and already sick of the apathy and blatant disregard for animals welfare. Whatever happened to the petition banning poisoning organised by Kar? We have many friends who will not visit here because of the animal problem and they have boycotted far east for the same reason. We will never frequent any Chinese restaurants here either, just in case. There is a plentiful supply of their favourite delicacy and for free so maybe they'd be tempted and We won't take the risk. Just about 18 months ago prosecutions were brought for this reason in Birmingham, UK.

They could release the dogs where they were caught or where they were brought from; not abandoned into a strange environment that they do not recognise. This will increase the dog population in areas where the number of dogs is already a problem, but because there is an expat community in these areas the dog dumping will continue.

i find your comments a little harsh regarding chinese restaurants.

yes in korea they do eat dog, but you cannot tar the whole chinese community with the same brush.

i own 2 chinese dogs, they were origional bred for farming and eating years ago in china, but today they have a protection society there, and show the dogs as in any other country(like the uk crufts).

Just to let you all know Foxy went back to Firdez again today and was on a drip for another two hours, but he seems alot more perkier today and has eaten a little food. He will have to go back tomorrow for more injections and hopefully we should get blood test results back aswell.

stavros No and No . We do care for animals that is true and they teach us so much about love. Is it the same south side the brits take care. We keep the vets here in buisness and we cannot or will not tolerate abuse to humans or animals. Nobody wants to preach to the converted as you simply cant. Where would this bloody country be without the income and care of the expats from any country. Not one person will care more about animals than family they just make pets part of a family. If you say you are savages then we will beleive it as thats what we see.Its sad x

ouch and ouch! :-( how did a thread alerting ALL communities about a poisoning turn into a war??

Three things i want to make very clear please:

Foxy was poisoned,we will possibly never know by who, although blood test results will show by what.We have not,nor ever would point fingers at anyone or either "community",is it only me who believes we are all one community ,one bad apple etc?

Yes KAR did castrate Foxy and return him here,we understood that this would be the case when we contacted them and we were so grateful to them,a castrated dog means he will not get aggresive (as if ) and terriortorial,he won't upset dog owners by stalking their bitches and risk getting hurt or worse and of course he won't reproduce and add to the horrendous problem we as a community have here.Thank you Kar.

While sitting with Foxy this morning in Firdez's frantically busy surgery most of her clients were Cypriot, caring loving owners looking out for their pets,so its not a Brit thing,IMHO,its

Unfortunately the animal problem is not just a Cypriot problem, it is the same in most countries. Whilst there are the 'locals' who care for their animals it tends to be the Brits that pick up the pieces and they are the ones that create the animal sanctuaries to care for these hungry and abandoned animals and organise fund raising events to be able to keep these sanctuaries running.

Stavros, we Brits do not care for animals more than our own families but like Lilli says, we make them a part of our families so of course we care deeply about them. You maybe have a different outlook on your pets but by making your comments about eating dogs, you have upset many people whether you like it or not.

Instead of getting defensive about it, why not try to understand another person's/nationalies point of view?

Yes it makes me very sad too Lilli. I think any country that condones the eating of cats and dogs is despicable, but that is my personal opinion and other countries have the right to think otherwise, even if I don't agree with their thoughts. I cannot abide countries that skin cats and dogs alive either, I see no sense in that and as far as the people that perpetrate this heinous crime, I can't even call them animals, as that is an insult to animals!

Anyway, we are going off-thread again (it's so easy to do isn't it?) so let's hope and pray that Foxy will make a full recovery and find a loving home very soon.

Yesterday morning dog poisoned in own back yard between 10.30 and about 2.30 am in Catalkoy. He was very lucky and because of his owner acting very fasy and the vet, he is making a fantastic recovery much to the vets surprise. We are all thankful for his recovery, as he is such a loving dog. It is something that somebody felt the need to do this to a pet in his own yard. Absolutely awful.

Do you think it is children doing this, maybe teenagers with nothing better to do? Kids can be very vindictive with animals sometimes. If it's an adult causing all this distress then he/she needs to be found and locked up, or....taught how to get a life!

I'm not sure how kids would have access to poisons Casa or what kind of kid would find causing animals such agony amusing.

Who knows Casacoco. There are little kids where she lives, but I couldnt imagine them being awake that time of night. That poison is lethal, so I hope its not children using it. He is such a lovely dog, only barks (not snarl or show teeth) when certain people walk by, but his owner stops him and sends him indoors. When she is out he is locked inside the house. So he isnt a pest. Its so awful. He is a lucky dog to still be with us, but now his owner is really concerned about letting him into his own back yard, so she is having to go out with him! So at the moment because of the after effects of the antidote he is very thirsty all the time so he is drinking lots and weeing lots, she is getting up throughout the night to let him out!

I wasn't really thinking along the lines of little kids so much, more teenagers whose parents may have chemicals such as rat poisons in their garden shed or such like? Older kids would certainly know how to use such stuff.

It's hard to comprehend that a grown adult would do something like this to other people's pets...unless they were mentally deranged or something. But I suppose that there are sicko's out there as we know.

Thanks Lili for speaking up and most people know what a lovely lady you are. Obviously some T.C's resent us Foreigners being here on their island eh? Never mind Sweetie, I'm sure many of them live in the UK and I hear that These Islanders resent the T.C's who have lived in UK more than they do the rest of us. Could it be that those who have lived abroad are more Broad-minded? Some Chinese do eat dogs and cats along with snake, monkey brains I could go on. Whilst I accept the difference in culture, I will never accept the blatant cruelty that goes with it. Skinning animals alive for the pot, Live monkeys fitted under the dining table only to have it's scalp cut open for diners to pick at it's brain, Whilst it is still alive, is well known practice. There is cruelty everywhere and it's our job to educate people to change. Without the monumental work of William Wilburforce and his like, slave ships would still be operating. MSG 20, start evolving ! The world doesn't revolve around you!

Terribly sorry mitsi but I don't think you will find too many TC's called Stavros. Do not neccessarily jump to conclusions, which is possibly why some TC's object to foreigners in the first place.

Sorry msg 45, meant GC but assumed that the person lived here so is a "north Islander". Have it from several "Islanders" WHO HAVE LIVED And worked in UK that there is a resentment toward them on returning to this Island. I have much experience of small minded islanders, having been born and bred on one. However, I always welcomed new blood with new ideas and concepts. Maybe cos my mum was a Londoner.

There was cruelty to animals there and still is but overall, people are much more aware nowadays. Thanks, I feel, to outside intervention of what was once quite an isolated community.

Thanks everyone for support for Foxy.He was back at vets this afternoon for further injections to combat damage done to his liver by the poison, back again tomorrw but is definitely brighter and taking an interest

At risk of sounding like a stuck record what he really needs now is a loving safe home

If anyone is muttering under their breath "ok why dont you take him in permanently?" - - - - - and i wouldn't blame you for asking, we have a blind diabetic Westie and a three legged Pointer who require all of our attention and don't feel it is fair ,particularly on Foxy,to bring him into our home permanently .

Jen - no, you don't sound like a broken record at all. I think most of us know that unless you keep plugging away (be it animal re-homing, nagging at builders, etc. etc.) you get nowhere.

I sincerely hope Foxy finds the home he deserves.

Good luck.

Foxy finally seems to be getting back to his old self, so Ive managed to get some pictures of him. If anyone thinks they can give him a home then please contact me. He will make someone such a lovely dog, hes so placid and loyal! He is good with other dogs, also good with Children. So please consider giving him a home because we can't keep him here forever, he really does deserve a good home. If you are interested please email me at Jen2jade@aol.com or leave me a message.

Hi Jen & Jade,

Went past yours yesterday and it was sad to see Foxy on a chain (before anybody starts it was a good long chain so he still is able to get around). He is looking good and such a friendly dog. Not sure if anyone else knows this but Foxy is probably the best looked after street dog I have ever seen. He even has his own kennel.

Hope you find a home for him soon as he really is a good natured dog.

Thanks, luckily he's taken quite well to being on a chain and doesen't bark at all at night thank god! He's getting regular wee-wee walks and our company. It really is sad that we've had to resort to chaining as it is something we really don't agree with, but a what risk if we let him wander again? Kars couldnt believe how well looked after he was aswell, none of us could take him in so we all clubbed together to make sure he was fed, had shelter in the winter and vet fee's covered. Really want to find him a good home now, he truley does deserve it; he's such a good dog! As much as I want him to have a loving home i'll miss him so much.

Hi bogey I only wish I could but I cant take any more in as I work and its so unfair. I do go around and feed strays and maybe I should not but I cant see them starve. I cant control the barking as sadly these poor creatures run in packs and 4 to 5 o clock they bark its thier nature.I wish I could win the lottery so I could rid the streets and home them so sad xx

Them bloody dogs in cyprus are a pest and dangerous i am not surprised people go around doing this.

on a visit last year i walked down a small road to meet our taxi after having a drink in the paradise bar and was set upon by two very large dangerous looking dogs.

they were just left to run wild by there not so caring owner and only given the fact i can climb a scaffold that i got away with all my limbs.

if i had the children with me that night god only knows what would have happened, if owners allow there dogs run wild and scare the hell out of people i am not surprised this kind of thing goes on.

i dont agree with harming any animals at all but if i had a gun that night i would of put one right between the eyes of both of them.

its reasons like this why we have the dangerous dogs act , muzzle them in public, keep them on leads and general keep control of them as it has shown in the past these dogs are killers in the wrong hands.

paradise bar users be aware !!!!!

Hello Sweep

that must of been horrible experience and I fully understand your reaction but - - - - - - - - - random poisoning is just not the answer, what about children being exposed to that? I truly believe its only a mattaer of time before we hear of tragedy like that.

The purpose of this post was to alert owners there had been a poisoning in our area, and also to try and find responsible owners for Foxy because we no longer feel it is safe for him to be community dog if he risks poisoning again. Foxy never has been vicious,he's a big softy with everyone he meets as i'm sure you've gathered from testimonys to him on here, but I do agree pack dogs ,dogs being allowed to roam and irresponsible owners are a massive problem here, one we are trying to do something about. Given a big gun - - - - - - - me,I think I would shoot the owners and ex-owners who put the dogs on the streets

Really hope you don't have another experience like this.

hi jade

any kind of harm to animals is not on and i would personally make them eat the poison if they were courght doing this kind of act.

you are 100% correct the problem is with the owners not the pets they do not deserve to have mans best friend and should barred for owning them when they allow them to terrorise the public in this way.

my friends dog was posioned by burglars and died the following day and that was very sad thing to happen to anyone or any dog.

sweep im so sorry for what you experienced. My feeling that the street dogs are to scared to go near you. If they were left to roam then this is iresponsible. We all try to help and sometimes find that its the brits who leave the dogs to roam. Its all so very hard and poisioning is just so awful. I live in fear when I take my now 4 anywhere for a walk.

Yet another posting that has left me both sad and mad in equal measures !!

I am so pleased that Foxy made a recovery from his terrrible experience, bless him.

I hope somebody can give him a good home so he can be safe of the streets. Sadly though here even well care for loved dogs are not safe. Early in the new year my dear friends dog was poisoned in his own garden.

Please can anybody help Foxy ??

tie it up somewhere in lapta and problem solved, when will you learn that nobody wants these dogs.

i keep reding about the danger to children of poison but what about the danger to children from wild vicious dogs, what about the danger to motorists, what about the barking all night, what about the disease they carry.

for those with good pets keep them on a leed and in you own gardens, the wild dogs must be kulled like they do in the UK, taken off the streets and if not claimed destroyed.

Hey Amber

Thank you ,yes Foxy has made a full recovery ,mainly due to Firdez's suberb care and also Foxy's sheer love of life.

He truly is one of the sweetest natured dogs i have ever encountered, mates with everyone and soo good with other dogs.

He needs a home and family to lavish his love and loyalty on,the rewards will be ten fold!!!

How are you doing with getting yours back to UK ?

You care for animals more than families?! Sorry, have I lost the plot? What a lot of fuss

about a dog. For me people come first, children, old folks. Soft, sentimental folk, get real!

Hello phylray

dunno about the plot you may or may not have lost but i think you may have been confusing threads. Nowhere on here does anyone claim to care more for animals than we do our families, the fact that some people consider pets as part of the family may perhaps have confused you?

As for getting real - - - - the real point of this post was to warn other pet owners of a poisoning in our area, soft n sentimental??

If post titles are of absolutely no interest to people why on earth bother to read them and then leave comments that serve absolutely no purpose?

Quote from a soft sentimental film - - - - - - if you can't say anything nice then don't say nothing at all ;-)

Msg 82......" What a lot of fuss about a dog"

Sorry, but for us animal "lovers/carers" it is not a case of "what a fuss"....it is about doing the best for the welfare of an animal.

Jen....good on you for being so caring. I really hope you find someone to take on Foxy.

re message86 - - - - I suspect not forgotten to bereaved family and friends, however this thread continues because of peoples genuine concern fo Foxy, because we are still seeking a loving home for Foxy, and also because random people choose to leave random comments on the thread, thus bringing it to the fore again.

Thanks mate ;-)

like all cypriot childrens favorite position in the car is between the front seats loose wont be when they go through the windowscreen

we care about animals and cypriots or anyone should be thrown in prison for having kids loose in a car or on a scooter with no helmet

what right do you have to make the rules in someone else country? if you do not like things here go back to where you come from. what next, educate us, teach us new religeons, convert us from savages? what is it with the british and there dogs? you care more about them than your children, you make me sick.

I just have to reply to the above 'you care more about them than your children'. You are the hypocrite here! I for one would never put an animal before a child. Have you seen what the drivers do here, they drive like lunatics, do not look in their mirror's, they are usually smoking or they have their mobile phone stuck to their ear, but the really crime beening committed is that they sometimes have a child on the lap or the child is leaning up again the front screen - NEVER WITH A SEAT BELT ON. It would be good perhaps if you could put some of your energy into sorting that problem out and I for one would be right there with you. THINK OF THE CHILD

it has been proven that there is a link between animal cruelty and child cruelty.

Anyone convicted of cruelty to animals, is more likely to be cruel to humans also- THIS HAS BEEN PROVEN! it is in their nature to abuse anything smaller and weaker than themselves - another name for them is weak bullies

We should look after 'all creatures, great and small'

jenfarrell let me think, the dark side is a place that is reccognised by every other country in the world not just one, because it is recconnised you can fly directly in to it and it can trade with whatever country it likes, it is not embargoed and the british government does not issue officail warning about buying property there, you can drive a car from the dark side in any other country and it is not run by the military, there are laws in place for animal cruelty, and i could go on and on and on and on but you will not listen. think about what you write before you make a fool out of yourself again

Can't understand these idiots going round poisoning dogs willynilly. Why don't they get organised and get shut of the strays all at once.

ps and include the barking basxxxds that are chained up day and night.

pps Don't all startshouting at me, you KNOW it makes sense.

cheers Stavros, all I was expecting was negatives from the blue rinse and menopausal expats, and their "do as I do/say" husbands.

Mind you, getting an endorsement from you isn't likely to enhance my standing in said ex pat community.
