What a week we had! From walking around the harbour to getting lost on the karpas by taking an old road winding through the mountains, from dining out on the streets of kyrenia to singing karaoke in Sams place on weds with Ozzie B,To dining at the silver rocks to watching chelsea win the cup at the fez,to eating at the dolphin to watching all the old boys clubs hanging around in the villages. It is just the best and i've done a lot of traveling in my time,Wife and kids loved it too and to cap it all weve come back with an offer excepted on a 3bed apt in Alsancak village! Will have the keys in sept and just cant wait!!The one thing that stuck in my mind more than anything else was walking past a shoe shop in the middle of kyrenia that had shut for a couple of hours after dinner, they'd left a selection maybe 20 or so shoes out on the pavement on a busy walkway for people to look at,we couldnt believe it!!Where else would you see this i ask you? What a place i tell you. contd.

Hi Sporty, I took have just come back from NC. People do talk a load of hogwash about the north but that's because they are either jealous or ignorant...or both!

Talking about taking your life in your own hands, my flight back to Bahrain was extremely eventful! Some moron made a hoax call to the Gulf Air office saying we had hijackers on board. Luckily at the point of take off the control tower ordered the crew to abort take off and return to the terminal. 3 hours later and a lot of searching of luggage, sniffer dogs and the bomb squad, we were allowed to take off. My point being, is that everytime one gets on a plane we are taking our life in our hands, so a trip to the north of Cyprus is a piece of cake by comparison!!

Mind you, I had great delight in answering a questionnaire from a Ministry of Transport lady who was taking surveys in the departure lounge...when asked where I stayed you should have seen her face when I told her North Cyprus, it was a picture

Lilli - you and your champagne...hehe I am still trying to get to bed but these threads......

Sporty - yes, she then said to me 'oh, occupied territory' ! I didn't answer her because I thought that was a choice comment coming from someone working in an airport which is built predominently on Turkish Cypriot land!!! Who's occupying whom? Hey ho that's a topic for another discussion...

To be serious you are taking off from her country so her reaction is completely understandable if you consider who is the interloper. Also Larnaca airport is not built predominantly on TC land unless you have evidence to the contrary.

Sporty i am so pleased you had a great holiday, the real locals are such nice honest friendly people.

Things have changed so much in the past 14 years since i first came here but some things will never change.

Could you imagine going into a petrol station in the UK filling your car and then omg no money to pay, they would call the police but here they just say "no problem" bring it next time.

Good luck with the apartment i am sure you will have some great times out here and the kids will love it.

Thanks also for the chocolates.

Ilovekibris - actually Larnaca airport IS built on predominently TC land! But, point taken about me taking off from her country. Her comment just irked me, that's all.

i really must complain

we've stopped many times for sheep and goats crossing the country road,

in the east of north cyprus

as well as parties of sand grouse with the little ones trotting at the rear

all you can really do while you wait is breath in the scent of wild flowers

enjoy the view of distant mountains

as well as listen to the hum of bees and chirrup of cicadas

in fact your level of stress falls so low that it is quite difficult to start the motor and amble on

into this peaceful, warm and welcomong landscape with the sea glittering beside you

I have to agre with msg 15, a very small part of larnaca airport is owned by a tc, its the bit used for the hangers, the lady off cause had every right to say "occupied territory" as it is not recognised by any international country and that is what she will have written along side your Q&A..

no one come November will be able to keep posting the "What about the tcs land at the airport"as the NEW airport is all on gc land.

Sporty glad you enjoyed your time on our northen shores.

So what will happen to the old airport? Will it be demolished, back rent paid and the land returned to the rightful TC owner? (A la Orams)

Absolutely wonderful just about sums up Northern Cyprus in my humble opinion.

I have never known a place that had such positive effect on me it was wonderful. For those cynics reading this saying the sunshine does that, then your wrong we were only there for the week and had some of the most torrential rain even the locals could remember for most of that time and I still loved every minute.

We just got back last night as well - I agree with all you are saying - it just gets better and better with each trip - ignore all the doom mongers. One of the highlights had to be dinner at Kybele in the grounds of Bellapais Abbey - and the sunset over Turkey -Wow, quite amazing - the mountains went red and it looked more like two or three miles away, we have never seen it so clear. The most amazing weather !

I must agree with everthing you all have been saying, we arrived back on the 30th and it was our 8th visit to the beautiful north, however I must admit the first 4days were dire, we normally use a well known hotel in Lapta, but fancied a change so we went online and found a family run hotel 3 miles out of Girne, promising rest and relaxation. BUT they failed to mention on booking that there was a 5 storey two tower casino/hotel being built immediately next door, we had construction noise from 8am to 4pm we could not use the pool because of all the dust, and the local dogs barked all night, the food was expensive, and drinks exhorbent 14YTLs for two Measured Mean Brandys.

Needless to say we check out and went back to Lapta, and found what we orginally wanted, big thanks to Flippers from the moment we walked thru the door we had an amazing time, I did not want to leave. Also big thanks to Lilli for making my birthday so special

Can't wait to come back in October, but its back to Lapta

its Kavalanar apts just after the supermarket, turn left and its up the top,its a resale, the couple moving out are upgrading to a brand new villa from the same builder,he is letting them part exchange it so we are buying it off him, theres a few new ones left, this one didnt even get in the estate agents window,we were looking around the day it came up for sale, right place right time i guess, but superb quality of build, and of course all electric/water meters already in so no hassle to have to sort that out either. It was quite refreshing to see a well run complex and parts of the site that were still being finished off was well orginised and tidy, which was a first after some of the stuff we seen, the village is just delightful.I'm a builder myself and i'm really fussy when it comes down to finishing touches, couldnt fault it,marble stairs and good quality wrought ironwork for handrails in the stairwells,it just makes all the difference! We are really happy and just cant wait to go over again.

Plenty of people are saying this but where is the evidence? Cos I've heard others saying it's actually a small plot near the fence and only a fraction of the whole airport. So who's right?

Sporty fully agree, the North of the island is a gaurded secret to those that have visited and enjoyed its many charms.

It has its occasional challenges, but in comparison a lot less than more affluent countries.

An island destination with a definate aura and magnetismn.

Please continue to enjoy your new found place in paradise.

Hi Sporty,

I personally beleive Cyprus is heaven. I love everything about cyprus and i want to move back to. We just opened a restaurant in Girne called Paparas bar and restaurant but unfortunately we have to fly back to London next month till we sort things out. What is so upsetting is that I don't want to go back and we have to. I am sure i will cry like a little baby till we reach to the airport. Good luck in your new flat and i wish everything goes well with you and your new home.

You'll usually find me in a sports bar watching the big screen,or a karaoke bar,or maybe on a tennis court. Will try to get around to many of the places/businesses on here also.

Oh poor you ginandtonic, i too love everything about this Island. It sounds a bit sick, but every day I wake up, I am so greatful. I take kodak pictures in my head, because I have so many photos it's mad. I love my life so much here, if I had to go back to Uk, I would be kicking and screaming. This isn't just my opinion, but quite a few friends of mine too. I consider myself one of the luckiest people alive to love my life at my age.

Hope you love yours too.

Dear "TRNC"V

re msg 22

The only thing NEW will be the terminal building - which is moving to the west ! The Hangers, are like most of Mackanzie Beach area, on TC land..

To others.. to many to list..

For the UMPTEENTH time - if the only excuse some folk have to the wholesale selling of GC land for private gain is "Larnaca Airport" - you are simply demonstrating near TOTAL lack of knowledge of the CY prob - re property issues.. not to say lack of geographic knowledge..

WHERE would you put an airport post 74 - not on TR occupied land, and not interfering with UK air traffic - and mountains ???

..and YES the effected TCs should have been given compo - and not have to wait.

Lastly, enjoy the heaven whilst it lasts.. when TCs get investment money - they have already demonstrated they will bugger up the land, too :( ... The only reason it has not been more ruined IS the surreality of the situation in Cyprus.
